Wrexham Year of Culture 2011
Hello and welcome,
Eight days. 160,000 people. The BBC’s largest outdoor broadcast event after
Wimbledon.
Let me explain. Wrexham will host one of the biggest parties in Wales this summer
when the National Eisteddfod pitches up between July 30 and August 6.
For those eight days, we will be the platform for showcasing Welsh culture to the
world. And if you miss it, you’ll probably never forgive yourself. It’s that big!
But there’s more to Year of Culture than one event.
Over the next three months we’ll see scores of events staged throughout the
county borough. Some highlights? Try Wrexham Science Festival or Wrexham
Fashion Week. Two very different shows – each serving up creativity and
innovation in equal measure.
What’s more, some of our events are being driven forward by patrons with world
class pedigree. Like opera star Mark Llewellyn Evans.
As we’ve said before, Wrexham Year of Culture is about experiencing new things.
New art. New interests. New skills. So keep life interesting. Try something different.
By the way, if you’re wondering about the masks on the front of this programme,
they’re the work of pupils from Borras Park Junior School and St Giles Primary
School.
These talented students beat a host of others to design the best theatrical tragedy
and comedy masks. Life is a drama. But you don’t always have to read the script.
Enjoy.
Wrexham Year of Culture Patrons
We are delighted to be able to announce that we have a new patron -
Mark Llwellyn Evans. Mark studied at the Guildhall School of Music
and Drama and The National Opera Studio, London and has worked
for most of the UK opera companies, singing a wide range of title roles.
Mark performs regularly in concerts and oratorios throughout the UK
and Europe. He is currently awaiting the release of Guy Ritchie’s new
Sherlock Holmes film, in which he appears alongside Robert Downey
Jnr, Jude Law and Stephen Fry.
One of the highlights of the second Wrexham Year of Culture
programme was the Musical Theatre Masterclass, led by patron Gareth
Valentine. Ten aspiring singers were put through their paces by Gareth,
whose enthusiasm and expertise drew out their talent, to the delight of
the audience. Mervyn Cousins, Musical Director of the Llangollen
International Eisteddfod accompanied the performers on piano and there was a guest performance
by Lydia Griffiths, another Wrexham Year of Culture patron.
