I give so that the money can be used to research illnesses and diseases of cats. I give to memorialize the cats I’ve lost over the years to these diseases. I probably give to ease the loss (and guilt) I feel when they have not survived. I give because there comes with this gift a tangible plaque on the wall that reminds us that this animal was special and made a difference and was worthy of being remembered. “I want my pets to have some validity, for someone other than myself to see that their lives meant something. Most people who don’t have animals cannot understand the bond we can have with a pet, especially if it is not a guide dog or a particularly useful animal. I think it is important for those of us who know this bond to be able to express it without apology.” 17

Back row: Paula Brown with Maddie and Eileen Adams with Zoe. “We first started selling candy in the Ryan Hospital’s Business Office as part of our own children’s fundraisers for their schools and athletic teams.When those sales were over, we found that a lot of the students and staff still came in looking for candy and snacks.As an office, we decided to continue with the sales by buying the candy ourselves.Then we had the problem of what to do with the profits. So, whenever someone would advertise they were taking part in a run, a bike trip or any other charitable event, we would give a donation funded by the candy sales.When we heard about the School’s Take a Seat campaign, we thought ’Well, that’s a lot of money, but as they say, charity begins at home—and the Vet School is home.’ So we signed up for a chair and started making payments on it whenever we accumulated a few hundred dollars. Eventually we completed our pledge of $3,000! It really makes us all very proud to know we will be represented in the new building.”
