Offered by the Kresge Foundation of Troy, Michigan, the Challenge marked a huge milestone in the history of the School, and would not have been possible without the contributions from the Penn community, alumni, individual donors and various organizations.The two Penn Vet classes that contributed the most to the Kresge Challenge were the Class of 1978 (highest number of alumni donors) and the Class of 1934 (best participation percent). The Kresge Challenge, an all-or-nothing grant, required that the School raise $13 million through 5,500 new gifts and pledges by October 1, 2005 to receive $1.5 million from the Foundation.The Kresge funds were designated toward construction of the Vernon and Shirley Hill Pavilion, the School’s new state-of-the-art teaching and research center, which opened for the spring 2007 semester. The Challenge was one of the largest in the Kresge Foundation’s history and, at the time it was issued, the largest ever for an Ivy League institution.The success of the Kresge Challenge completed a major component in the School’s $100-million Building New Levels of Excellence campaign.The Kresge Foundation is a $3-billion national foundation that builds stronger nonprofit organizations—catalyzing their growth, helping them connect with their stakeholders and challenging them with grants that leverage greater support. The Foundation concentrates its programming on capital campaigns as a key opportunity for nonprofit growth. In 2005 the Foundation awarded 216 grants totaling more than $130 million to organizations in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, South Africa and Mexico.
