The successful completion of the Building New Levels of Excellence campaign, begun under his leadership in 2001,
means there are now new faculty resources, more student scholarships and a much improved student surgery suite
on the Philadelphia campus. It also means new equipment for both the George D.Widener and Matthew J. Ryan
Veterinary hospitals, updated facilities on both campuses and increased funding for faculty research. But more than
anything, it means the completion of the construction of our new academic center, the Vernon and Shirley Hill
Pavilion. With five floors dedicated to teaching and discovery, the Pavilion is one of the world’s finest veterinary
education centers. The naming gift from the Hills, the largest gift the School has ever received from living donors,
allows us to expand our world-class teaching and research mission.
Thanks to you, our donors, we successfully completed the Kresge Challenge, a $1.5-million grant from the Kresge
Foundation of Troy, Mich., which was used toward completing the Hill Pavilion. I know I speak for Dr. Kelly when I
say we are extremely grateful to all who contributed to this achievement. The Kresge Challenge, issued in June 2004,
required that we raise $13 million through 5,500 new gifts and pledges by October 1, 2005.We met—and
exceeded—these criteria thanks to generous contributions from the Penn community, alumni, individual donors and
various organizations.
The School also receives annual operating support from foundations, individual donors and the Commonwealth of
Pennsylvania, resulting in a highly successful public/private higher education partnership. This funding allows us to
continue to provide an unrivaled veterinary education to some of the country’s brightest students. As a private
institution, our School relies on gift income to meet its goals and objectives each and every year.Your contributions
play a critical role in our ability to serve the citizens and animals living in Pennsylvania and beyond. I thank you all for
your support and hope we can count on your continued investment in the University of Pennsylvania School of
Veterinary Medicine for years to come.
Sincerely,
