What a difference a year makes! Last time I wrote to you about the radical renovation of
Peterson Hall I was observing from my temporary exile in Gilbert Hall. By fall 2007, we
had moved back into a building recognizable only by its historic exterior. On the inside,
the claustrophobic warren of barren hallways and windowless spaces has been magically
transformed into an eye-popping gem of air and light. At its heart, an open staircase
connects the second floor with the third floor, where MBA and MAcc Program offices, the
graduate lounge, and eight spaces for group work are located. Historic building details
obscured by previous renovations stand revealed once again. Light floods the interior
through skylights and glass walls.
The change in mood is palpable. Students and staff alike are ecstatic about the new layout.
The rooms for small group work are bustling beehives of activity—visual manifestation of the team spirit and
cooperative learning environment that is the hallmark of a Lundquist College of Business education. Small
wonder prospective students come away from their campus visits impressed.
With the transformation of Peterson—soon to be followed by the introduction of the innovative center-based
M.B.A. curriculum now in the works—we are poised for a most promising future.
With more tenured faculty members and student interest
in decision sciences, the Ph.D. Program has re-instituted
its concentration in operations management (OM). The OM
concentration focuses on optimizing business processes (for
example, production and distribution) and policies (such
as staffing and pricing) internally and within the broader
supply chain. Through the program, students develop
research skills in model building, theory development, and
data analysis—areas that reflect the strength of the decision
sciences department. The OM concentration is the fifth area
of specialization available to Ph.D. students. The others are
accounting, finance, management, and marketing.
