f a CUlty foCUs Jennifer Howard-Grenville ExcEPtIoNal ScholarS aNd EdUcatorS Our faculty members are superb researchers and teachers who enhance educational opportunities for students, inspire success, and provide value to the business community. The following is a partial list of faculty activities, achievements, and research. assistant Professor of Management Jennifer howard-grenville secured a 10,000 British pounds (approximately $20,000) research grant from the United Kingdom’s National Industrial Symbiosis Programme. The grant will support her ongoing research on the emergence and forms of interorganizational collaborations aimed at reducing the ecological impact of industrial production. Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski appointed Professor Phillip J. romero to the advisory council for the state’s Comprehensive Revenue Reform Task Force. Romero also briefed Kulongoski and staff on the ability of liquefied natural gas to meet the Northwest’s energy needs. The Institute for Supply Management awarded Assistant Professor of Management anne Parmigiani a grant through its Senior Research Fellowship program to study relationships among dealers, manufacturers, and suppliers in the RV industry. The National Bureau of Economic Research and the Social Security Administration awarded Associate Professor of Finance John Chalmers, Assistant Professor of Finance Woodrow Johnson, and Assistant Professor of Finance Jonathan reuter a grant to research how peers affect when people choose to retire. The management department welcomes taryn stanko from University of California at Irvine and andrew nelson from Stanford University as new faculty members as assistant professors. Stanko will teach courses on principles of management and human resource management, and Nelson will focus on strategic management and entrepreneurship. Roberto Gutierrez Nagesh Murthy At the annual meeting of the Decision Sciences Institute in November 2007, Associate Professor of Decision Sciences nagesh murthy won the Emerald Highly Commended Paper Award for his article “A Framework for Assessing Value Chain Agility” (with Patty Swafford and Soumen Ghosh) published in the International Journal of Operations and Production Management. Murthy was also selected to be on the Production and Operations Management Conference Committee for the third year in a row, and he will represent the University of Oregon in the 2008 Faculty Partnership Conference in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, June 20–26, 2008. Assistant Professor of Marketing Jun ye received the Best Paper Award at the American Marketing Association Educators’ Winter Conference 2008 in Austin, Texas. The paper was “Change Strategies and Ambiguous Roles: Managing Frontline Performance and Psychological Well-being in Fast Moving Service Organizations” (with D. Marinova and J. Singh). At the 2007 Society for Marketing Advances Conference, Assistant Professor of Marketing susan l. golicic received the Donald J. Bowersox Best Logistics and Supply Chain Manuscript Award for her paper “Evaluating Interfirm Relationship-Performance Spirals: A Longitudinal Study” (coauthored with Chad Autry). Warsaw Sports Marketing Center Managing Director Paul swangard was one of twenty people BusinessWeek selected to rate the most influential people in the world of sports for its “The Power Players” special feature. Other panelists included Martina Hingis, Tommy Lasorda, and Mark Spitz.
Associate Professor of Accounting steve matsunaga taught a course at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology as a visiting scholar. Several high-profile publications, including The Nation and The Chronicle of Higher Education featured in-depth articles discussing Philip H. Knight Professor of Business dennis howard’s research with Jeffrey L. Stinson. Their study, published in the Journal of Sport Management, analyzed whether donations to the country’s 119 largest athletics departments correlated with higher overall giving to those universities and colleges. Through the efforts of his students on the team, University of Oregon football players honored Instructor of Accounting michael tomcal as a faculty “Coach of the Day” for the USC game on Saturday, October 27, 2007.
