Slightly older than Saint-Saens, Alexis de Castillon’s arostocratic roots opened doors for him
and he became very good friends both personally and professionaly with Saint-Saens. Their

Finnish composer Erkki Melartin was an exact contemporary of Ravel and ‘discovered’ Mahler
whilst studying in Vienna. He brought Mahler’s music back to Helsinki and gave the first
