When Johann Sebastian Bach assumed his position as Thomaskantor in Leipzig,
the students at St. Thomas could already look back on a 500-year-old tradition.
On the occasion of the 800th anniversary of St. Thomas the rich musical legacy of
this institution, prior to Bach’s appointment there, are brought to life in sound. In
addition to works by Johann Sebastian Bach this CD presents compositions of six
of his direct predecessors. The chamber choir Josquin des Prèz, under the
direction of Ludwig Bohme, impresses with its remarkable musical sensitivity and
surety of style, as well as with an homogeneous, perfectly balanced choral style.
This new recording offers two particularly good examples of ‘orchestrations’ of
smaller works: Beethoven’s String Quartet in F Minor op. 95 and the ’Kreutzer' Violin
Sonata No. 9 in A Major. These are two prime examples of the extent to which our
view of a masterpiece can be transformed and expanded through arrangement.
Violinist Antje Weithaas has created a new orchestral version of the work in
collaboration with the Bern Camerata’s double bassist Steuri, both performing here.
