In 1625 during the Thirty Years War, Schutz published this collction as his opus 4. In the 40 Latin motets he used texts from the prayer book of Andreas Musculus, which is based on psalms and verses from the Song of Songs, as well as texts from the Gospels, devotional texts and various prayers. On the occasion of the 800th anniversary of St. Thomas the rich musical legacy of this institution, prior to Bach’s appointment there, are brought to life in sound. In addition to works by Johann Sebastian Bach this CD presents compositions of six of his direct predecessors. The chamber choir Josquin des Prèz, under the direction of Ludwig Bohme, impresses with its remarkable musical sensitivity and surety of style, as well as with an homogeneous, perfectly balanced choral style. These are two prime examples of the extent to which our view of a masterpiece can be transformed and expanded through arrangement.
