Ihe book Ihe Soirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman deals with the masslve
displacement experienced by the tribal Hmong peopte of Laos, when - some who were tucky enough
fo escape - re-located to the USA. The archetypal myths of the Hmong people (one tribe among
dozens) have never assimilated with Western medicine or religion. Consequently, re-location was
correlated with many tragic side-effecfs. One such case was that of a girl named "Lia Lee'. ln this
case, Lia Lee was treated by a Hmong shaman pertorming an animist rite. Such animist rites are not
exclusive to the Hmong, but are shared by every tribe in both Thailand and Laos. City people &
(Tha| lowlanders have often 'forgotten' this archetypat knowtedge of cause & effect. This story is the
case in point which this trip examines. Learn more about the real situation today in Thailand
After a leisurely breakfast (leave hotelat 0930hrs), visil Kukrit Pramoj's åouse. Kukrit would be
considered a Renaissance man today, because his reputation lies in his mastery in many forms of
arts, including politics and journalism. A few decades ago, during Kukrit's life, he was not always
seen in such a charitable light, but the wide variety of his accomplishments greatly influenced modern
Thai political history and even pop-culture. Kukrit was first a journalist, who founded the famous Thai
Rath newspaper but he was many things: a Thai classical dance expert; was named National Artist in
1985; was an author whose work encompassed many subjects from humor to drama. Honored with
myriad literary and arts prizes, Kukrit was also a close adviser to HM the King, and was also even
Prime Minister, among other things. His traditional Thai house provides a lovely collection of
antiques, artìfacts and ítems used ín fåe classlcal Thaí arts which he gathered up during his life.
His unique sense of humor offered a satirical view of the times and he was ofren arrested for
inside to see the Emerald Buddha, the displays of royal artifacts & memorabilia, and wall decorations.
Continue on foot to the Royal Navy Club for a simple Thai lunch. Board our boat nearby and cross
UNDERSTANDING THAI CULTURE
THRoUGH PRACTIGE IN CtAssIcAL ARTS
After breakfast, drive to a group of old wooden traditional Lanna Thai-style house in the university,
and spend the day immersed in Thai culture; 'learning-by-doing'essential as well as the finer points
of Thai culture with ORfGIflARTS. The common threads of Thaí style & culture surround you
from the moment you enter the Kíngdom, but usually, visítors to Thaíland can only 5ee' fåe
culture through temples and museum visl'fs..... possibly a festival lf one ls lucky. There are of
course the ubiquitous "tourist shows" which degrade the spiritual values of the arts being
presented. While one can often find excellent "demonstrations" of certain arts or dance, too often one
lacks a context or explanation to make them truly understandable (so similarities or differences are
lost to the untrained eye and therefore remain unappreciated). ORIGIN ARTS is a hands-on
opportunity not just to see, but to do and experience traditional arts and culture.
ORIGIN ARTS: LEARNING To..WAI',; A MASTER'S GRAcE; THAI DESIGN
commanding the birth of Chiang Mai. Have lunch in a Local restaurant
DoISUTHEP MoUNTAIN & TEMPLE
ln the afternoon, we will go to the summit of Doi Suthep Mountain, a 1600 meter peak. Near the top
is the 600 year old temple of Wat Phra Doi Suthep. Your guide will show you how modern Chiang
After breakfast check out and travel to visit the Population & Communíty Development
Assocìatíon (PDA) is probably the oldest and most famous NGO in Thailand. One of its initial goals
was to demonstrate that it was not difficult to implement a community-based family planning project
even in one of the farthest provinces of the kingdom. Concentrating initially on lowlanders, the project
soon expanded to include hill tribe communities which had high rates of mother and child mortality.
One of the reasons for the high rates of mother and infant mortality was poor health conditions and
access to medical services. These basic services were provided by the Chiang Rai office of PDA.
