Projects funded in 2009

Melbourne – a city for people.
This booklet confirms for us all
that Melbourne is home to a
thriving, active and engaged
community that takes pride in itself
and cares for its fellow citizens.
Detailed in this booklet are 107
projects that have been funded to
the value of $398,021.
While these projects are being
funded by the City of Melbourne,
they are projects that have been
identified and are being delivered
by local community organisations
– the majority of which are run by
or supported by a large number of
volunteers.
Many wonderful organisations call
Melbourne home and you are invited
to look through the projects that will
take place in 2009.
You may find that another
organisation is undertaking a project
that links in with the needs of your
own organisation or maybe they’re
doing something that you want to
deliver within your own community.
We have provided contact details
so you can get in touch with these
organisations to find out more about
what they’re doing and how you
might be able to form innovative
partnerships.
This year the booklet features case
studies of projects that took place in
2008. There may be some lessons
to learn or you may be inspired to
run your own projects based on
their stories.
Congratulations to all of the
organisations that have been
successful in receiving funding
for 2009.

Kensington Redevelopment site
Urban Communities (formerly
Kensington Management Company,
KMG) received a grant as part of the
composting, reducing water use and
increasing the opportunity for healthy
social and recreational activities.
Deborah Wilson from Urban
Communities, said without the
opportunity to receive funding
for small projects such as the
community garden, community
development would suffer.
“This project has been a
great example of community
strengthening“ she said.
“It has engaged the community and
continues to improve the health and
wellbeing of the residents and the
community in general.”
Residents as well as broader
partners such as support services,
local schools, local traders and
businesses were engaged in
building the garden. Getting various
members of the community together
helped to foster a shared ownership
of the garden.
Entering into a partnership with
Kensington Neighbourhood House
and Adult Multicultural Educational
Services proved to be very
productive.
A Community Learning Partnership
project was initiated and resulted
in gardening workshops and a
community gardening learning
block being offered to participants.
This in turn led to participants
enrolling in English classes and
computer classes at the Kensington
Neighbourhood House.
“It was wonderful to see the cultural
exchange from the interaction of
the gardeners, as well as to see
residents smiling and meeting their
neighbours,” said Deborah.
“The community garden has now
become a great place for people to
come together in healthy recreational
and social activity.”
It has also become a central focus
for ongoing community education
programs, as well as a meeting
place.”
Ten gardeners involved in this
project have been nominated
Opportunities for
the community to
come together, share
information and develop
community connections
have never been more
abundant.
In 2009 there will be 37
projects taking place
throughout the city to
ensure it remains a place
for people. Projects
Victorian Mental Illness Awareness
Council – Craftea Chat program
delivered by Cate Lawrence at
Ross House in the City.
One of the program’s 2008
recipients was the Craftea Chat
program, which is being run on
behalf of the Victorian Mental Illness
Awareness Council.
The project involves an eight week
series of weekly craft workshops
for women with mental illness. Cate
Lawrence, who runs the workshops,
says it provides an opportunity for
women to learn creative skills, have
fun and meet others with similar
experiences.
“Alot of friendships were built
through the group and I received
really positive feedback from all the
women involved.”
As they all really enjoyed building
on their craft skills and being in a
space where mental illness could
be discussed without judgement or
ignorance.”
Being involved in meaningful,
enjoyable activities is important
so mental illness does not totally
consume a person’s sense of self.”
Cate believes group craft sessions
can help women to learn new skills,
have fun, form connections with
others in similar circumstances
and to gain a sense of personal
achievement.
Interest in the workshops was
much higher than anticipated and
a second group could be formed if
there was additional funding. Cate is
also looking into developing Craftea
Chat into a community organisation
so they can run ongoing projects.
The group decided to focus on
promoting accessible services in a
zine publication that will also include
craft tutorials and patterns, tips on
managing mental illness and recipes.
Group members have also
requested monthly meetings until
the end of the year and we are going
on a ‘stitchnic’ picnic!.

Centre undertook the Practical
Parenting Skills Pilot Program
for Fathers.
HOPE (Hands On Parenting
Education) identified a need in the
community for a program providing
one-on-one practical parenting
education and support for fathers.
Kate Galea, Parenting Education
and Support Worker, said it was
exciting to be able to get the
program off the ground.
“Each parent and child is different
and their needs vary, therefore
each session is tailored to the
needs of the parent and their child’s
developmental age and stage”
said Kate.
“Sessions can include anything from
day to day routines and nutrition to
bonding and changing nappies.”
The client driven approach ensured
that parents received the assistance
they needed.
Thomas, 35, who had recently
separated from his wife said he
learned how to get his daughter
to sleep as well as sticking to her
regular routine. .
“Now my-ex partner knows our
daughter is in good hands and
with Kate’s help I feel like I can
manage the occasional tantrum with
confidence,” said Thomas.
A fellow participant, Rob, had no
previous experience with children
when his son was born. After
separating with his partner Rob was
not confident he could look after his
now three-month old child.
“Kate showed me basic things and
made me feel at ease about how
just spending time with him and how
to bond with my son,” said Rob.
Kate discovered the program was
greatly beneficial and filled a need
with in the community. The number
of participants is now steadily
growing.

Melbourne Citymission
undertook Lost and Found, a
photographic exhibition, as part
of last year’s funding round.
Lost and Found involved homeless
young people using photography
and art as a means of describing
their experiences of grief, loss and
hope.
These images were incorporated into
a ceremony held at the City Library
in April 2008 that acknowledged their
grief and helped them to name the
things that gave them hope.
Paul Turton from the Citymission
said while the ceremony was a key
highlight of the project, the creative
process of making images that
described their experiences, as well
as the conversations prior to the
ceremony, contributed to a process
of healing.
“Many of the young people found the
process very helpful,” said Paul.
“At the ceremony a number of
young people acknowledged how
helpful it was to name their loss and
remember friends who had died.”
In addition, young people
appreciated the acknowledgement
that being homeless itself is an
experience of numerous losses.”
Paul believes the community grants
allow Melbourne Citymission to
undertake projects that cannot be
catered for within the Citymission
budgetary constraints. They
also enable Citymission to work
creatively and holistically with
young people and add value to their
existing services.
“These specialised projects help
young people to reflect on their
experiences and improve the long
term outcomes and prospects
for homeless young people,”
said Paul.
