McCarthy Printers Job Definition Format (JDF) is the industry’s only specification for the exchange of job specifications, processing commands and messages between graphic arts production systems. Between 1994 and 2006, over 15,000 printing companies have disappeared in North America alone, and as this trend continues globally, the printers that thrive and grow are those that operate lean and efficiently. JDF-enabled process automation is a key technology to highly efficient printing ��affordable and puts it within reach of printers of all sizes by eliminating the need for defining the interface between graphic arts systems. ��improve printer-customer relations — JDF is supported by popular layout tools and web-to-print systems, allowing printers to act as a direct extension of their customer’s workflow and providing those customers with faster and more reliable service. � Printers that automate are profitable — As PIA/GATF’s Chief Economist has reported, investment in technology is a key difference between profitable printers and unprofitable printers, and process automation with JDF has begun to widen the gap between printers that are growing and making money and those that are stuck in the printing methods of the 1900s.

The JDF schema provides a structure that allows systems from different vendors to validate and process data received or transmitted from other systems. The four main functions that JDF provides are: 1. A language for capturing and communicating job specification and production processing data throughout the entire lifecycle of a print job. 2. A command and control language called Job Messaging Format (JMF) that allows systems that organize a job to communicate instructions to devices on the shop floor and allows those devices to respond with processing and job status data. 3. A frame work for organizing any printing workflow to allow for automatic job processing, including both completely automated operations as well as mixed operations that may include some manual or legacy production processes that are not automated. 4. A query syntax that allows workflow or print MIS systems to query devices to ascertain their capabilities and to determine if available devices are capable of processing a job being scheduled or estimated.
