Peace Bridge Over the
Foyle Officially Opened
The £14m Peace Bridge in Derry / Londonderry was officially opened recently
by EU Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn.
Contractors Graham were
responsible for coming up
with the design concept and
obtaining planning permissions
for the bridge, which included
submission of an Environmental
Statement. All of this was
achieved on programme, allowing

spans of 65 metres, 100

the tidal Foyle River with two

to cross the Londonderry to
Castlerock railway line.

McAdam Design, while
AECOM and Wilkinson Eyre
were the architects.

field too, while the events gave
many customers their first view
of the new Construction King T
series backhoe loaders, in both
equal wheel 695ST trim and the
more popular 580T model.

The bridge will carry pedestrians
and cyclists to and from the
Cityside and Waterside, and it is
hoped it will be the focus for not
only major regeneration of the
area, but the symbolic union of
what was once a divided city.
The chairman of Derry's
regeneration company, Ilex, said
the peace bridge would become
the city's iconic image. Sir Roy
McNulty said it would become
a "recognisable landmark" and
he added: "It is not as big as the
bridge across Sydney Harbour,
but for Derry I think it will provide
a memorable image and I think
people will see it on postcards
and images of the city."

later this year, following successful heats in both the North (2/3 June) and South (9/10 June) of the country.
