Peace Bridge Over the
Foyle Officially Opened
The £14m Peace Bridge in Derry / Londonderry was officially opened recently
by EU Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn.
Contractors Graham were
responsible for coming up
with the design concept and
obtaining planning permissions
for the bridge, which included
submission of an Environmental
Statement. All of this was
achieved on programme, allowing
Operators from all over the UK
attended the heats, as more than
100 customers a day took part in
the four Case roadshow events.
The two Northern heats were
held at bucket and attachment
specialist Miller UK’s Cramlington
head office, while the Southern
heats were hosted by loyal
Case customer McKenna Plant
in Oxfordshire. All four winning
operators will head to the Case
Customer Centre near Paris later
The CEA’s half yearly conference
is taking place at The Heritage
Motor Museum, Gaydon in
Warwickshire and as sponsors
of the forthcoming PLANTWORX
construction exhibition, is
taking this opportunity to gather
together its supporting brands
for the ‘Grand Stand Draw’!
In true lottery style the ‘Grand
Stand Draw’ gives all exhibitors
an equal chance for the primary
exhibition stands and demo areas.
All the brands who gave their
early support to PLANTWORX,
with Plant & Civil Engineer
acting as Media Partners, will
detailed design and construction
to commence as intended.
As part of their commitment to
provide sustainable communities,
Graham employed a number
of local jobless people to work
on the project, including a
Community Liaison Officer.
this year, to take on winners
from other European countries.
While many operators were keen
to take part, other customers were
equally happy to try out a range
of new Case machines away from
the stopwatch. These included the
latest Case 721F wheeled loader
and the first C series tracked
excavators in the UK, both of
which are equipped with Tier 4
compliant low emission engines.
be in the draw and it’s not too
late to enter your company,
the closing date for entries is
the 15th September 2011.
The thinking behind the stand
lottery was that the ‘leading
brands, who were also part
of the ‘working party’, which
include JCB, Merlo, Manitou,
Volvo Construction Equipment,
Ammann, Thwaites and Bomag,
would be classed as ‘anchor
stands’ and will be strategically
positioned around both areas of
the site (Digging Area and Non
Dig), so all that exhibit around
them will benefit from maximum
This iconic foot/cycle bridge
is the first of its type to be
built in the UK - a curved selfanchored
suspension bridge,
with two inclined pylons and
a reverse curved deck.
It includes three continuous
spans of 65 metres, 100
metres and 65 metres over
the tidal Foyle River with two
approach spans of 37 metres
to cross the Londonderry to
Castlerock railway line.
Consulting Engineers were
McAdam Design, while
AECOM and Wilkinson Eyre
were the architects.
Joining the EU Commissioner
for the opening ceremony were
the Taoiseach, Enda Kenny,First
Minister Peter Robinson, deputy
First Minister, Martin McGuinness
The recently launched TR270
compact crawler loader was
a popular model on the test
field too, while the events gave
many customers their first view
of the new Construction King T
series backhoe loaders, in both
equal wheel 695ST trim and the
more popular 580T model.
“The Rodeo days have been a
big success for us this year,” said
Scott Freeman, UK and Ireland
footfall. The stand sizes have
also been limited, which ensures
that those with smaller marketing
budgets are also able to compete.
Paul Bidwell, Manitou said,
“PLANTWORX is a new
construction event specifically
designed for the construction
industry. Manitou UK welcomes
the initiative of the 'Grand Stand
Draw' as a prime example of
the total transparency of the
organisers in delivering an
event with the best interests
of all the exhibitors and to the
ultimate benefit of the visitor.”
and Social Development
Minister, Nelson McCausland.
The bridge will carry pedestrians
and cyclists to and from the
Cityside and Waterside, and it is
hoped it will be the focus for not
only major regeneration of the
area, but the symbolic union of
what was once a divided city.
The chairman of Derry's
regeneration company, Ilex, said
the peace bridge would become
the city's iconic image. Sir Roy
McNulty said it would become
a "recognisable landmark" and
he added: "It is not as big as the
bridge across Sydney Harbour,
but for Derry I think it will provide
a memorable image and I think
people will see it on postcards
and images of the city."
Case Rodeo Ropes In Premier UK Operators
Case Construction Equipment UK will field a strong, four-man team at the final of the Case European Rodeo in France
later this year, following successful heats in both the North (2/3 June) and South (9/10 June) of the country.
The PLANTWORX ‘Grand Stand Draw’
The PLANTWORX ÔGra nd Stand DrawÕ is scheduled for 22nd September following the CEAÕs conference.
Business Director for Case. “We
have had a really strong turnout
with some excellent operators
taking part. Having launched so
many new machines this year,
the events have also provided
existing customers, potential
new buyers and our dealers
with a perfect opportunity to
try many of our highly efficient,
low emission machines.”
The finer details of the ‘Grand
Stand Draw’ are yet to be
finalised but the afternoon will
conclude with a canapé reception
within the Motor Museum.
Full details will be up on the
