Missing lorry unearthed with
Plant & Civil Engineer’s Help!
In our last issue we ran an appeal from McCreath TaylorÕs Peter Johnston under the heading: Help!
Do You Recognise This Lorry? Well, eagle eyed readers thought they did and got in touch with us.
SD "W" Type dustcart

From the 1920’s, the SD Freighter
in our picture was last seen
abandoned in a field on the Ards
Peninsula two decades ago. It
was manufactured by Shelvoke
& Drewry, represented at the
time here in Ireland by McCreath
Taylor. The lorry was used in
refuse collection and remained
in service until the 1960s.
After reading the appeal in Plant
& Civil Engineer, William Tease
got on the phone to Peter to
tell him he had a similar looking
lorry stored in a hayshed for
the last 10 years. It turned
out to be, not the one in our
photograph, but a ‘W’ type
dustcart, reg No 2217 IJ, with a
light grey colour crew cab, SD
petrol engine, fore and aft tipper
body – but in poor condition.
Peter tells us that as it turns
out, this particular SD was
also supplied by McCreath
Taylor to Bangor Borough
Council, possibly in 1959.
It’s now been ‘rescued’ and
taken to James McAleer’s in
Fintona with a view to having it
restored to its original condition.

New appointment
at Alan Milne
Tractors
Allan Hetherington has
joined the sales force
at Alan Milne Tractors,
covering both the north
and south of Ireland.
On show will be the new
Terex® Finlay 684 tracked
mobile screener before its
launch in Quarter 4, 2011.
This new model can be seen
working with a Finlay J-1160
jaw crusher on the main booth.
There will also be a working
circuit including a Finlay J-1175
jaw crusher, Finlay I-130RS
impact crusher and Finlay 694+
inclined screen on the main
booth. The recently released
Finlay 863 will also as a static
display on the main booth.
In the recycling area the new
Finlay 863 compact heavy duty
screen can be seen working with
a Finlay I-110 impact crusher.
24 year old Allan, who has a keen interest in farm and plant machinery,
will be promoting Dieci, Takeuchi and Kverneland across the island,
and Fendt in Counties Cavan & Monaghan, as well as Massey Ferguson
tractors in north and south Armagh and parts of south Down.
