Breeder‘s portrait Ahead of his time Horses have been bred at the Klintworths in Ohrensen near Bargstedt for at least four generations. The Klintworths breed Hanoverians in accordance with the region. By Jürgen Stroscher Grandfather Martin Klintworth on Sportlitze in 1950. 18 The Hanoverian 08|2012 Martin is the first name of great-granddad, granddad and dad Klintworth. The 50-year old farmer broke the tradition and named his oldest son Ole (now 15 years). None-the-less Ole plans to take over the family business one day. “My granddad and my dad were on the track of today’s modern sporthorses very early on. Both competed our mare Sportlitze very successfully in jumping competitions up to the S-level during the fifties and the sixties,” Martin Klintworth shares. Today’s damline traces back to the producer Sporno by Sportanzeiger II. The line is named after the homebred mare Kurflamme, born 1959, by Kurland II. Although her dam Sportlitze by Sporno is considered the founder of today’s breeding program of Family Klintworth. Sporno was known for his good jumping ability. In his time he was very popular with the breeders from the Elbe region. “One of his descendants was our chestnut mare Sportlitze. She was very big and her exterior did not at all correspond with the exterior of workhorses. Luckily my grandfather quickly realized the capabilities of the mare and did not sell her. He used her in competition and in his riding horse breeding program instead.” Her full-brother Scambolo was sold however and participated in German Championships several times with his riders Peter Schmitz and Karl Heinz Giebmanns. It was this rider Scambolo won a bronze medal with in 1963. The Klintworths did not only have a good sense for breeding horses; they also had the talent to ride. Until today they apply the following principle to the sale of horses, “I only sell horses I have trained and ridden. , I can only then stand behind the quality of my horses with a good conscience. That is the way it always has been in our family since generations.” Family Klintworth is Silke, Janina and Martin Klintworth. also partial to jumping which reflects in his breeding goal. “Great jumping ability distinguishes all our breeding horses; good rideability is important for competition suitability at the same time.” Best prerequisites In general all foals are raised in the home barn of Family Klintworth. The horses enjoy a healthy and horse-friendly upbringing on spacious fields. They grow up separated by age and sex under the best conditions. For example more than 20 hectares are available for colts/stallions to roam around on. Depending on ability colts are presented at the licensing; mares complete mare inspections and mare performance tests before their training is continued. Mares that receive the state’s premium award are earmarked for breeding. They must prove themselves in jumper horse classes beforehand though. The horses are are up for sale once they are four or five years of age. Generally the vintages in that age group are marketed and sold. “If you by a horse from me you get one that has participated in jumper horse classes at the A- or L-level; in other words the horses I sell are in training. Therefore also renowned riders like Carsten-Otto Nagel or Sören von Rönne come to us when looking for a rising youngster with potential.” For decades Martin Klintworth has afforded himself the luxury of keeping one or two suitable jumper horses for his own use. His father had already granted him this privilege. His serious jumper career began at the age of eighteen. He competed the seven-year old homebred Weinstein by Wiesenbaum xx in his first S-level jumper class on the Dobrock. Martin Klintworth competed a number of
horses in regional championships over several years. He even participated in the German Championships and placed well. The dark bay gelding Weinstein competed up to a proud age. He placed in an M-level class at the age of 24 with Jörg Klintworth who is Martin’s younger brother. Wiesenbaum xx - a lucky catch Using the Thoroughbred sire Wiesenbaum xx turned out to be a good decision for Family Klintworth. Today’s entire damline has its successful origin back to then. Two full-sisters to Weinstein, Weinbohla (1976) and Weinbrise (1977), both out of Kurflamme by Kurland II, delivered many exceptional jumper horses. Weinbohla successfully competed up to S-level and eight out of her ten foals did the same. Alcazar by Argentan became Bundeschampion in the division for 6-year old jumper horses in 1990. Afterwards he found his way to Japan. He participated in the Olympic Games in Atlanta. His full-sister Annabelle won Verden’s first free-jumping competition and the Hanoverian Riding Horse Championships. The mare Sevilla by Singular Joter and the gelding Aikido by Athletico out of Weinbrise successfully compete under rider Pia-Luise Aufrecht. Especially Aikido has been victorious in S-level jumper classes numerous times. Martin Klintworth placed up to the S-level with the mare Gilette by Glücksstern. Gilette received the state’s premium award and has delivered several competition horses. The mare Ricola by Rio Branco out of Weinbrise was a member of the Weser-Ems Cadre with her rider Yvonne Borgmann and is presently on the way to enter S-level jumper competitions. Her full-sister Ricoletta received the top score of 10,0 for her jumping performance in the mare performance test. Ricoletta delivered the very promising Ariba by Acorado I and Landina by Landor S. The successful competitor Fabriano by Wanderbursch who is the mount of today’s federal trainer Jonny Hilberath goes back to the dam line of Kurflamme. “The Hanoverian horse with its good jumping ability distinguishes itself through correctness and quality but also through its physical toughness. For instance our Weinbohla turned 30 years of age and Weinstein was top fit up to an advanced old age,” Martin Klintworth raves not only about the athletic abilities of Hanoverian horses but also about their robust health. He favors Thoroughbred influenced horses with good basic gaits. “I prefer riding sensitive horses. I do not just bank on so-called fashion stallions in my breeding program.” The list of producers is long. The horse breeder adheres to another principle of his ancestors. If a combination proves to be promising, the the sire will be used again if possible. “I have had very good experiences with this principle and success. I use a producer several times until I have two mares by him.” Fifteen outside mares join the family’s herd of ten broodmares on more than 100 hectares of fields in Ohrensen. “Mare owners can board their mares with me. The foals grow up here and are started under saddle. They can be picked up when they are trained.” Boarding horses is part of the business. A total of about 150 horses live in Bargstedt and about 20 foals are born every year. The riding facility includes two indoor riding arenas and a large outdoor riding/jumping ring. Martin Klintworth increasingly uses Verden’s auction program as a marketing tool in addition to selling horses directly from the farm. “Even though the demand for horses of quality is still big I have noticed a slight overall decrease,” Martin Klintworth views the future of his Hanoverian breeding program positively. His wife Silke supports him wholeheartedly. While Martin Klintworth has retired from actively competing his children Janina (20), Ole (15) and Pia (13) follow more and more in his footsteps. Now there are six horses that are not for sale in the stable. The children prove their abilities in competitions on these horses.
