Flowers very free flowering, 45mm. long and 30mm. wide with orange-red<br />

petals. Flower tube very hairy with occasional bristles. Stigma and<br />

style greenish-yellow, 6-lobed, filaments lavender pink.<br />

Fruit brownish-red, densely covered with white hairs.<br />

Seeds dull brownish-black.<br />

Type locality given by Backeberg as South Bolivia - North Argentina. This<br />

species has recently been recollected by W. Rausch at Quebrada<br />

de Humahuaca Jujuy, Argentina (R214).<br />

Notes this is an easily grown popular species with very showy flowers. It<br />

is very closely related to a number of o<strong>the</strong>r species belonging to<br />

subsection II namely R. brachyantha and R. ritteri (see colour<br />

plate).<br />
