Classification Section III Digito<strong>rebutia</strong> Subsection I Pygmaeae<br />

Body up to 25mm. in diameter, simple at first but becoming caespitose<br />

with age. The epidermis bluish-green often tinged deep purple<br />

particularly during <strong>the</strong> winter.<br />

Areoles elliptical with sparse greyish-brown wool, raised in <strong>the</strong> tubercles.<br />

Spines arranged in 12 distinct ribs. Centrals absent, radials strongly<br />

pectinate and adpressed, up to 12 in number, 4mm. long, greyish-<br />

white, brownish at <strong>the</strong> base.<br />

Flowers very variable, pink to salmon often bicoloured, 25mm. long and<br />

20mm. in diameter with a white throat. Stigma 6 lobed green, style<br />

green, filaments white or pinkish. Tube brownish-green with<br />

green scales with copious white wool.<br />

Fruit dull brownish-black, dome shaped, testa finely pitted.<br />

Seed large, 7mm. in diameter, greenish-brown covered with white wool.<br />

Type locality Yavi, Jujuy Province, N. Argentina. Map 2, No. 35.<br />

Notes This species has a very wide geographical range and a large<br />

number of minor variations occur. Many of <strong>the</strong>se minor variations<br />

have been described as ‘new’ species or varieties. There are for<br />

example a very large number of flower colour variants and also<br />

spine colour variants. It is indeed possible that this species could<br />

include 90% of all <strong>the</strong> species ascribed to <strong>the</strong> subsection<br />

Pygmaeae!<br />
