Flowers 40mm. long and 25mm. in diameter, sepals greenish-orange, petals<br />

flame orange, throat white. Stigma very pale green, style white,<br />

filaments white. Flower tube and ovary with very small scales. Very<br />

thin flexuous white hairs up to 8mm. long produced from <strong>the</strong> axils of<br />

<strong>the</strong> scales.<br />

Seeds small, dull black, dome shaped.<br />

Type locality Narvaez, Dept. Tarija, Bolivia. Map 4, No. 103.<br />

Notes Beautiful pure white spined species with gorgeous clear orange<br />

flowers. Flowers are often produced at odd times during <strong>the</strong> year<br />

but <strong>the</strong> main flowering time is at <strong>the</strong> end of May beginning of June.<br />

Plants labelled as R. nivosa are referable here, <strong>the</strong>re is no distinct<br />

difference and it was found at <strong>the</strong> same locality.<br />

Classification Section I Aylostera<br />

Body globular up to 10cm. high, 5-6cm. wide, light green in colour,<br />

offsetting grousely at first but later forming large clumps 100mm. or<br />

more in diameter.<br />

Areoles small with sparse light brown wool.<br />

Spines radials ten or more, 3-7mm. long, glossy white. Centrals 2-3,<br />

yellowish-white at first later turning brown-tipped, up to 15mm.<br />

long.<br />

Flowers 30mm. long and 30mm. wide, petals red, buds dark red. Style and<br />

filaments white united with <strong>the</strong> tube, 5 lobed stigma.<br />

Fruit round, small with many bristles.<br />

Seed very small, matt black.<br />

Habitat Salta, N. Argentina. Map 4, No. 107.<br />

Varieties f. albiseta (Backbg.) Buin. & Donald. Central spines entirely white.<br />

f. grandiflora (Backbg.) Buin. & Donald. Flower 4cm. wide and<br />

40mm. long.<br />

f. schneideriana (Backbg.) Buin. & Donald. Central spines up to<br />

35mm. long, dark tipped.<br />

f. schumanniana (Backbg.) Buin. & Donald. Central spines golden<br />

brown, about 12mm. long.<br />

Notes Ano<strong>the</strong>r of <strong>the</strong> ‘original’ Rebutias, quite distinct with its prominent<br />

tubercles and spination.<br />
