Preface
Everywhere in Europe, associations, foundations, dedicated private people and
governmental bodies have for many years been trying to save the diversity of fruits. From
both cultural-historical and security-of-plant-genetic-resources point of view, it seems
especially important to pass on this rich treasure of forms, colours, taste varieties and
processing possibilities to the next generations.
Aim of the first edition of the „NGO-Zoom Fruits“ is to give an overview on all NGOs
dedicating their activities to this topic in the single European countries. However, only
those organisations are described which focus on the conservation and growing of old
fruit varieties. With the help of this booklet, exchange between organisations on the
national as well as on the international level is to be supported. Private addresses,
governmental bodies and other research institutions are added which might serve as
useful contacts for anyone interested in the topic. In detail described are regionally and
nationally active NGOs, which take care of more than one arboretum. Significant
institutions looking after one arboretum are listed under „important private addresses” or
„other important addresses“. The introducing description „situation in the country“
originates from national partner organisations and represents their individual opinion and
judgement.
This first edition is a „prototype“ and does not claim to be complete. We are happy to
receive any supplement, correction and stimulation, which we will consider for the next
edition. We wish all readers of the „NGO-Zoom Fruits „ many informative hints and new
contacts which will hopefully turn out „fruitful“ in the literal sense.
