Switzerland Situation in the country In-Situ conservation of fruits is nearly complete done by private Organisations and persons in arboretas. A central database on fruit varieties is financed by SKEK (Swiss Commission for the Conservation of Useful Plants) and executed by Pro Specie Rara and Fructus. The database contains (2001) 5500 varieties of 21 species of fruits an berries. Most of theses varieties are not yet secured. An inventory on cherry varieties was executed 1995-97, from 580 varieties found some 120 coud be secured up to now. A national berry collection with some 300 accessions near Basel is hold by Pro Specie Rara. Conserving the genetic variety of our local fruit varieties for future generations and for the science Fructus has the leadership at four national projects to the conservation of bio-diversity. The most extensive project is to take inventory of all existing fruit and berry varieties in Switzerland. In four major collections more than 600 varieties of pome and stone fruit have been planted. There is an active change of experiences to other collections of varieties.
