Puente <strong>de</strong> Occi<strong>de</strong>nte / West Bridge<br />
En la vieja Carretera al Mar, a cuatro kilómetros <strong>de</strong>l centro <strong>de</strong> la ciudad <strong>de</strong><br />
<strong>Antioquia</strong> se halla un puente colgante sobre el río Cauca. Se trata <strong>de</strong>l “Puente <strong>de</strong><br />
Occi<strong>de</strong>nte”, tiene 291 metros <strong>de</strong> largo y es <strong>de</strong> belleza impactante. Construido<br />
por el ingeniero Sopetranero José María Villa, se inició el 4 <strong>de</strong> diciembre<br />
<strong>de</strong>1887, y se inauguró el 27 <strong>de</strong> diciembre <strong>de</strong> 1895. Pronto fue catalogado<br />
como una maravilla <strong>de</strong> la ingeniería mo<strong>de</strong>rna. Lo restauró el ingeniero Juan <strong>de</strong><br />
Dios Higuita Lara. Mediante Ley 25 <strong>de</strong>l 25 <strong>de</strong> diciembre <strong>de</strong> 1978 fue <strong>de</strong>clarado<br />
Monumento Nacional.<br />
The suspension bridge is located over the Cauca river on the old Carretera<br />
al Mar, four kilometers from <strong>Antioquia</strong>’s downtown area. The “Puente <strong>de</strong><br />
Occi<strong>de</strong>nte” is 291 meters long (954.7 ft) and its beauty is stunning. It was<br />
built by an engineer from Sopetran named, José María Villa. Its construction<br />
started on December 4th, 1887 and it was inaugurated on December 27th,<br />
1895. It was soon consi<strong>de</strong>red a won<strong>de</strong>r of mo<strong>de</strong>rn engineering. An engineer<br />
named, Juan <strong>de</strong> Dios Higuita Lara restored it. In 1978 it was <strong>de</strong>clared a<br />
National Monument by the law 25.<br />
