Descending on a wide, smooth road, with “fondas” and restaurants on both
sides, the landscape offers a view surrounded by mountains, hollows, valleys,
fresh air, a clear sky and open horizons. The traveler begins to descend toward
the municipality of San Jeronimo which emerges in the distance as a white light
from the surrounding vegetation and shortly it vanishes on the side. The typical
warm weather from this zone is more noticeable now.
The trip starts with the mild weather of the city of Medellin and from the “Terminal
del Norte” (the North Bus Terminal), which offers several alternatives for public
trasportation. The trip continues on the way up the “Carretera al Mar” (the
“roadway to the sea”) passing through the highly populated neighborhood of
Robledo and the San Cristóbal subdivision, soon reaching the “Fernando Gómez
Martínez Tunnel”, 4.6 km/2.9 mi long. This is the longest and most modern
tunnel in Latin America. It was awarded the 2007 National Engineering Prize.
A little further away, the natural geographical triangle, which is formed by the
Tonusco and Cauca rivers, framing the town of Antioquia, can be seen next to the
foothill of the Cerro de Buriticá.
