Applying the particular equation and<br />

using the values resultants of the<br />

laboratory analysis (Table 3) <strong>de</strong>termines<br />

the Mine Water Sustainability In<strong>de</strong>x in<br />

the 4 measurements points (Figure 8 and<br />

Figure 9). The results indicate that in the<br />

point 1 the sustainability is mo<strong>de</strong>rate, in<br />

the point 2 is low must the influence of<br />

the mine water discharge for the called<br />

gallery ““Fonte <strong>de</strong> Masso””, in the point<br />

3 is very low, therefore it is biggest that<br />

caused for important mine water<br />

discharge by called gallery ““Salgueira””<br />

and finally in point 4 also is very low.<br />

The ESImw values <strong>de</strong>monstrate that in<br />

the mine water measurements date<br />

(January 2001) the discharge of mine<br />

water caused unsustainable situation in<br />

superficial water of the “Bo<strong>de</strong>lhão” river.<br />

These sustainability in<strong>de</strong>xes are very<br />

useful for remediation actions and<br />

application the Management of<br />

Sustainable Mining Practices (SMP).<br />

5. CONCLUSIONS<br />

The un<strong>de</strong>rground mining is very<br />

important activity and of great<br />

importance for the human <strong>de</strong>velopment,<br />

but the projects must be with<br />

environmental protection.
