Podemos deducir de ello que esta población estaba situada en algún punto limítrofe de la provincia de La Habana y Pinar del Río. Hasta el momento no hemos podido precisar a cuál de de las dos poblaciones pertenece la marca aunque nos inclinamos por la segunda*, por indicaciones encontradas en el contenido de las cartas. Cualquier información adicional que pueda aclarar esta interrogante será bienvenida. The second alternative we find in a quote from Angel Torrademe who points out that there was a subalternate mail line between Artemisa and San Salvador established in 1837. We can assume that this town was somewhere between the boundary of the provinces of Havana and Pinar del Rio. At this point we can’t be sure to which population center the postmark belongs to, although we are leaning towards the second one*, based on some of the letters’ contents. DE LA EMISIÓN SOBRECARGADA DE 1883, CONOCIDA COMO "ARABESCOS" O "ARAÑITAS" CON SOBRECARGAS ROJAS Y NEGRAS, Y SIN VALOR O CON DIFERENTES VALORES EN LA SOBRECARGA. LOS FALSOS ROJOS: ESTUDIO DEL SELLO DE 10 C. DE LA EMISIÓN SOBRECARGADA DE 1883, CONOCIDA COMO "ARABESCOS" O "ARAÑITAS" CON SOBRECARGAS ROJAS Y NEGRAS, Y SIN VALOR O CON DIFERENTES VALORES EN LA SOBRECARGA. Carlos Echenagusia. Una de las emisiones de sellos cubanos más estudiadas del período español es sin duda la emisión sobrecargada de 1883 que lo fue mediante arabescos o figuritas que se utilizaban para confeccionar los billetes de lotería el siglo XIX (Figura 1) durante la colonia española. Sin embargo, a pesar de ello, muchas dudas crea inclusive a los más entendidos especialistas y por consiguiente a los coleccionistas, que generalmente no se detienen a observar con detenimiento estos sellos. En ocasiones me han traído para saber mi criterio determinados sellos sobrecargados en diferentes colores de los que en su día fueron ordenados, y también con diferentes valores de acuerdo con el color que le correspondería a cada uno de ellos. Quiero con este artículo dejar claramente definida esta emisión, y para que en el futuro no se dude sobre la legitimidad de las sobrecargas, afirmar con toda certeza que: NO EXISTEN SOBRECARGAS AUTÉNTICAS EN DIFERENTE COLOR sobre sellos base que no sean los estipulados, según la circular de la Dirección General de hacienda de la Isla de Cuba, de fecha 16 de junio de 1883, y que aparecen reflejadas en la “clave reservada para la confrontación de los efectos contraseñados...” (Figura 2). He realizado un detallado estudio de 15 bloques de 10 sellos cada uno, que contienen una amplia gama de variedades en la sobrecargas de diferentes colores, que van, desde la ausencia del valor, hasta la inclusión del valor de 5, 10 y 20, encontrándose además cuatro tipos de las sobrecargas que existen, colocadas en posición normal o inversa, y mezcladas en un mismo bloque normales e invertidas, e inclusive dobles, sobre el sello base; sin lugar a dudas todo un manjar filatélico, “para incautos,” pero, de buena fe traídos para su peritación. El trabajo me ha resultado fácil, debido al conocimiento de los moldes originales con que ha sido confeccionadas las sobrecargas base, y que han permitido planchear los bloques sin lugar a error. Esto permite situar todos los sellos estudiados como correspondiente al molde o plancha número 6, en la Figura 3 (página 87). One of the most studied Cuban postal issues of the Spanish period is the surcharged issue of 1883 that was done with small elaborate designs known in Spanish as arabescos or arañita. These were normally used on the colony’s lottery tickets during the 19th century (Figure 1). However, there are still many doubts about some of these surcharges, even among the most knowledgeable specialists and collectors, who do not always look carefully at these stamps. Occasionally these stamps have been brought to me for an opinion, including some surcharged in different colors and values other than those that are normally recognized as genuine. In this article I would like to clarify the characteristics of this issue so that in the future there are no doubts about the legitimacy of the surcharges, stating with all certainty that: THERE ARE NO AUTHENTIC SURCHARGES IN DIFFERENT COLORS on the basic stamps other than those stipulated in the flier issued by the Department of Revenue of the Island of Cuba, dated June 16, 1883, and that are listed in its “key for the confirmation of surcharged goods…” (Figure 2). I have carefully studied 15 blocks of 10 stamps, each containing a wide range of surcharge varieties in different colors, that consist of the absence of value and the presence of the 5, 10, and 20 values, including also the four types of existing surcharges applied in their normal or inverted position, and combined in the same block (normal and inverted), even with double surcharges on the basic stamp. They all consist of a philatelic feast for the “naive,” but given to me in good faith for my expertization. The work was not difficult thanks to the knowledge of the original molds used on the basic surcharges that have allowed for the accurate plating of blocks. This helps us to identify all the stamps studied as belonging to the mold or plate number 6, in Figure 3 (page 87). See also the Catalogo Especializado de Cuba (2002) in the section on this issue.
