EDITOR’S MESSAGE / MENSAJE DEL EDITOR
Aunque ha salido un poco más tarde de lo usual, estamos muy
orgullosos de ofrecerles este ejemplar extraordinario de nuestra
revista, el número 50, y agradecemos la ayuda de todos los autores
que han compartido sus conocimientos con nuestros lectores a
través de los últimos 17 años. La mejor manera de promover la
filatelia cubana es dar a conocer su inmensa riqueza y ésta es una
de las principales metas de The Cuban Philatelist. Ésta es
probablemente la única publicación especializada en el mundo
entero que consistentemente ha incluído por lo menos un artículo
de todas las áreas más importantes de coleccionismo en cada uno
de sus números durante los últimos diez años. Nos asomamos al
futuro con optimismo, confiados de que con la continua
colaboración de nuestros miembros, las mejores páginas de esta
revista todavía están por escribirse. La sección bibliográfica de
este número incluye un índice cumulativo de esta revista
organizado por tema, lo que esperamos sea de gran utilidad para el
coleccionista especializado en busca de un artículo específico.
También esperamos pronto poder listar todos los índices previos de
esta revista en nuestro sitio en el Internet (www.philat.com/cpsa).
Este sitio ha sido puesto al día recientemente por Ernesto Cuesta.
Los gastos adicionales incurridos en la producción de esta
revista han sido en parte costeados por los generosos donativos de
un grupo de asociados cuyos nombres aparecen en la página 139.
También queremos expresar nuestro agradecimiento una vez más a
Silvia García-Frutos por todos los años que le dedicó a la
preparación de las subastas cuya importancia ha sido fundamental
para las finanzas de nuestra Sociedad. Su última subasta fue sin
duda la más exitosa que hayamos realizado. A la misma vez le
damos la bienvenida a Jack E. Thompson que con gran entusiasmo
ha asumido la responsabilidad de las subastas. El éxito de las
subastas depende en gran medida en el material que nos envíen
nuestros asociados. También planeamos incluir ilustraciones a
colores de todos los lotes de nuestras próximas subastas en nuestro
sitio en el Internet.
Durante la reunión de la Junta Directiva el pasado mes de
septiembre se acordó aumentar las cuotas anuales al igual que el
costo de los anuncios. Los nuevos precios aparecen en la página
42.
En la competencia anual de literatura filatélica patrocinada
por la American Philatelic Society que se llevó a cabo
recientemente en Grand Rapids, Michigan, nuestra revista obtuvo
nuevamente una medalla de Vermeil.
En este número incluímos una gran diversidad de trabajos
originales que sin duda van a agradar a todo tipo de coleccionistas,
incluyendo un número considerable de nuevas marcas
prefilatélicas; un estudio detallado de algunas falsificaciones de los
arabescos de 1883; el primer censo de las cubiertas con sellos de la
emisión provisional de Puerto Príncipe; un resumen de todos los
errores y variedades de los sellos de la República; un maravilloso
trabajo sobre los indios Taínos; y una breve historia de una de las
compañías navieras más importantes en Cuba.

Although it has been somewhat more delayed than
usual, we are very proud to present this extraordinary issue
of our journal, number 50, and are thankful for the help from
all of the authors who have shared their knowledge with our
readers throughout the last 17 years. The best way to
promote Cuban philately is to publicize it immense richness
and this is one of the main goals of The Cuban Philatelist.
This is probably the only specialized publication in the
whole world that consistently has included at last one article
from all the most important collecting areas in each and
every one of its issues during the last ten years. We glimpse
at the future with optimism, confident that with the
continuous collaboration from our members, the best pages
of this journal have yet to be written. The bibliographic
section in this issue includes a cumulative subject index,
which we hope will be very useful for the specialized
collector searching for a specific article. We also expect to
soon be able to list all of the indices in the previous issues of
this journal in our Website (www.philat.com/cpsa). This
Website was recently updated by Ernesto Cuesta.
The additional costs of producing this special issue
were in part covered by generous donations from several of
our associates whose names appear in page 139. We also
want to thank Silvia Garcia-Frutos once more for all the
years that she devoted to the preparation of the auctions, that
are of paramount importance to our Society’s finances. Her
last auction was undoubtedly the most successful one we
have ever held. At the same time we would like to welcome
Jack E. Thompson who has assumed the responsibility of
the auctions with great enthusiasm. The success of the
auctions depends largely on the type of material sent by our
associates. Also, we plan to include color photos of all the
lots from our next auctions in our Website.
During a Board of Directors meeting last September, it
was decided to raise the annual dues as well as the cost of
the advertisements. The new figures appear in page.
At the annual philatelic literature exhibition sponsored
by the American Philatelic Society that was held recently in
Grand Rapids, Michigan, our journal got a Vermeil medal
once again.
In this number we include a large diversity of original
works that will no doubt please every type of collector,
including a considerable number of new stampless town
markings; a detailed study of some of the forgeries of the
arabescos of 1883; the first census of covers franked with
the provisional Puerto Principe stamp issue; a summary of
all the errors and varieties of the stamps of the Republic; a
wonderful work on the Taino Indians; and a brief history of
one of the most important shipping companies in Cuba.
We hope to be able to see you soon at one of our
annual meetings.
