HARMONY
HARMONY
Harmony is the science which studies chord structure, or how two or more simultaneous sounds
relate to each other. This concept also encompasses tone and semitone intervals, melody, and
rhythm.
Flamenco harmony consists of two distinct types of harmony. “Traditional harmony”, and the
“Flamenco mode”, which is unique to this music genre.
Before concentrating on flamenco harmony, we will firstly study chord structure.
Depending on the number of notes or sounds which form the chord, it is known as a triad (three
sounds), a seventh chord (four sounds), a ninth chord (five sounds) or an eleventh chord (six
sounds). A chord is usually built using consecutive thirds but it can also be found in other forms.
When the chord is built using thirds, the lowest note is called the fundamental, tonic, or root note.
The other notes in the chord are named after the interval they form with the tonic (T) – a third (3),
fifth (5), seventh (7), and so on. The chord’s title is determined by the interval between the
highest note formed by thirds and the tonic: 7th, 9th, 11th, etc.
