NATURE TOURISM INITIATIVE ON CAYMAN BRAC — BRADLEYfragile authority granted by the words “HeritageSite” written on the location and interpretive signs.The Lighthouse Footpath retraces the route of theearly lighthouse keepers along a 2-mile path to thebluff edge and dry shrubland vegetation at the extremeeastern end of the island. This path, after a battlewith a developer, has also been secured as a publicright-of way. It is the most beautiful and unspoiledplace in the Cayman Islands, with panoramicviews from 144-foot cliffs towards Jamaica andCuba. It is also the best place on the Brac to see largeseabirds, because colonies of Brown Booby and therare White-tailed Tropicbirds breed here. Both colonieshave shown sharp declines since the 1980s andare a cause for concern. The UK Government hasfunded a research project to produce a managementplan to sustain the Brown Booby colony and RoyalSociety for the Protection of Birds has funded a seabirdecologist to work with me in winter 2001 on thepopulation dynamics of the colony.A new Heritage House-Interpretive Centre hasbeen built at Northeast Bay on a small estate boughtby the Government for the project. It includes beachland, two acres of park-like plantation backed by the132-foot sheer bluff. Tourists can reserve walks ontrails led by a newly trained nature guide, the firstjob created for a Bracker by the project. The Centrewill also sell books on natural history and local craftsand will host cultural and natural history activities,slide shows, and talks by visiting scientists.
