SUGGESTIONS TO AUTHORSSUBMITTAL OF MANUSCRIPTS, ANNOUNCEMENTS, AND OTHER MATERIALS TO EL PITIRRE,THE BULLETIN OF THE SOCIETY OF CARIBBEAN ORNITHOLOGYSee El Pitirre 13(1) <strong>for</strong> more detailed instructionsForm <strong>of</strong> submissionAuthors are encouraged to submit manuscripts as a MS Word file attachment to an e-mail message sent to <strong>the</strong> editor[jwwiley@mail.umes.edu]. A hard-copy back-up also should be mailed to <strong>the</strong> editor. As an alternative <strong>for</strong>mat, authorsmay submit <strong>the</strong> manuscript on a 3.5” floppy disk, in PC or Macintosh environment, preferably using WordPerfect orMS Word s<strong>of</strong>tware. Authors should also submit a hard copy with <strong>the</strong> computer disk. Translation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> entire text in an alternate language is encouraged.At a minimum, an abstract should be provided in at least one o<strong>the</strong>r language.Format <strong>of</strong> submitted materials• The manuscript should con<strong>for</strong>m to usage in recent issues <strong>of</strong> El Pitirre.• Double space all written materials, including tables <strong>and</strong> figure legends.For scientific papers <strong>and</strong> notes:• Number pages through <strong>the</strong> Literature Cited.• Do not hyphenate words at <strong>the</strong> ends <strong>of</strong> typewritten lines.• Type tables separate from <strong>the</strong> text.• Type figure legends consecutively on separate pages.• Title page (numbered) — should contain full title, <strong>and</strong> authors’ names <strong>and</strong> addresses at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> research.The author’s present address, if different, should be indicated as a footnote. The title page also includes runningheads (less than 36 characters), <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> name <strong>and</strong> contact in<strong>for</strong>mation <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> author who can be contacted mosteasily.• An Abstract (less than 5% <strong>of</strong> paper length) should precede each longer article. It should summarize importantpremises, summarize findings, <strong>and</strong> give conclusions.• Text Citations — should include <strong>the</strong> author <strong>and</strong> year (e.g., Smith 1990, Smith <strong>and</strong> Jones 1991, Smith et al.1992). Multiple citations should be arranged chronologically.• Acknowledgments — precede <strong>the</strong> Literature Cited.• Scientific <strong>and</strong> common names are given at first mention <strong>and</strong>, <strong>for</strong> birds, follow <strong>the</strong> AOU’s Check-list <strong>of</strong> NorthAmerican <strong>Birds</strong>, 7 th ed. (1998) <strong>and</strong> its supplements.• Measurements should be in metric units.• Use continental dating (e.g., 14 October 1992) <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> 24-hour clock (e.g., 08:00 <strong>and</strong> 21:35).• Tables <strong>and</strong> figures should not duplicate material in <strong>the</strong> text or in each o<strong>the</strong>r. Each table requires a short heading,including descriptive in<strong>for</strong>mation that would answer <strong>the</strong> reader’s questions <strong>of</strong> what, where, <strong>and</strong> when.• Literature Cited: Follow <strong>the</strong> most recent issue <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bulletin <strong>for</strong> style.El Pitirre 14(1) Page 41
