XSection 77.8 DRIVE BELTSAll drive belts are spring loaded and self-tensioning,however after the first 2, 4, 8 and 10 hours of operation,the belts should be checked for proper alignment andwear. Thereafter, check the belts after every 40 hoursof operation or weekly, whichever occurs first.-NOTE-If you experience frequent belt wear or breakage,see your authorized <strong>Scag</strong> service center for beltadjustment.7.9 CUTTER BLADESA. Blade Inspection1. Remove the ignition key before servicing the blades.B. Blade Sharpening-NOTE-If possible, use a file to sharpen the blade. Usinga wheel grinder may burn the blade.-NOTE-DO NOT sharpen the blades beyond 1/3 of thewidth of the blade. See Figure 7-9.1. Sharpen the cutting edge at the same bevel as theoriginal. See Figure 7-9. Sharpen only the top of thecutting edge to maintain sharpness.Do Not Cut InAngle Blade Back2. Raise the mower deck to the highest position. Placethe lanyard pin in the highest cutting height positon toprevent the cutter deck from falling.30X Must NOT Exceed1/3 Blade WidthSGB033WARNING:Always wear proper hand and eye protectionwhen working with cutter blades.3. Check the cutter blades for straightness. If thecutter blades appear bent, they will need to bereplaced.WARNING:Do not attempt to straighten a bent blade, andnever weld a broken or cracked blade. Alwaysreplace it with a new blade to assure safety.4. If a blade cutting edge is dull or nicked, it should besharpened. Remove the blades for sharpening. See"Blade Replacement."-NOTE-Keep the blades sharp. Cutting with dullblades not only yields a poor mowing job, butslows the cutting speed of the mower andcauses extra wear on the engine and theblade drive by pulling hard.Figure 7-9 Blade Sharpening2. Check the balance of the blade. If the blades are outof balance, vibration and premature wear can occur.See your authorized <strong>Scag</strong> dealer for blade balancingor special tools, if you choose to balance your ownblades.C.
