GASTRONOMY<br />

The Honduran gastronomy is varied since it contains<br />

pre-Columbian, Spanish, Creole and, to some extent, African<br />

elements and flavors, typical throughout the Central American<br />

Atlantic coast.<br />

Traditional Honduran food is heavily<br />

dominated by maize,<br />

an indigenous crop that was the basis of the diet<br />

of the pre-Hispanic people of Mesoamerica.<br />

Although it varies a little in each region of the country, the<br />

Honduran diet includes meats, especially pork and beef;<br />

poultry such as chicken and hen; fish and various seafood<br />

depending on the area, tortillas, beans, rice, dairy products<br />

such as fresh cheese and cream, some vegetables, certain<br />

herbs and tropical fruits. Natural refreshments and coffee, as<br />

an aromatic hot beverage, is accustomed throughout the<br />

country to accompany breakfast, a sweet baked treat in the<br />

afternoon, or dinner.<br />
