C. mordeirae Sal C. vulcanus Boavista C. verdensis Sao Tiago <strong>LA</strong> AVIFA<strong>UNA</strong> INSU<strong>LA</strong>R Si entre la fauna que habita un territorio insular relativamente remoto existen grupos que actúan como bioindicadores certeros del medio en el que se desenvuelven, apostaríamos sin dudarlo por el grupo de las aves. Las islas son y serán siempre algo muy especial por la singularidad de sus biotas y la fragilidad de sus ecosistemas, aún más aquellas surgidas de los fondos oceánicos debido a procesos volcánicos de distinto signo y que han sido sometidas durante millones de años por las fuerzas de la naturaleza, hasta convertirse en una suerte de portaaviones lávicos anclados en mares y océanos. Esta es la historia “millonaria” de Sal, una pequeña plataforma insular subdesértica y sedienta, castigada y moldeada por vientos y mareas con el añadido de una notable influencia saharianosaheliana. Con estas premisas, cualquier naturalista avezado que recale en ella puede intuir de manera aproximada el carácter esencialmente erémico (o desértico) de su avifauna terrestre -como ya destacó Murphy (<strong>19</strong>24) para el conjunto del archipiélago-, disfrazado en parte con otras especies de corte sinantrópico llegadas al abrigo de cultivos, ganadería, jardines, construcciones y salinas. Ciertamente, una fauna ornítica relativamente pobre (sobre todo la nidificante), que se nos muestra enriquecida por las especies marinas y los variopintos efectivos migratorios que las visitan año a año. Boletín de la Asociación Amigos del Museo de Ciencias Naturales de Tenerife La avifauna de Sal ha sido estudiada por distintos ornitólogos y naturalistas a lo largo de la historia, en particular a partir de mediados del siglo XIX, destacando entre otros Carl A. Bolle, Boyd Alexander, George F. Simmons y colaboradores, René de Naurois, Jacobus C. den Hartog y Cornelis (Kees) J. Hazevoet. En particular, deben resaltarse las aportaciones generales de autores como Naurois & Bonnaffoux (<strong>19</strong>69) y Hartog (<strong>19</strong>90), así como las obras recopilatorias, referidas a todo el archipiélago, de Murphy (<strong>19</strong>24), Bannerman & Bannerman (<strong>19</strong>68), Naurois (<strong>19</strong>94) y Hazevoet (<strong>19</strong>95), aunque algunos de ellos no recalaran en esta ínsula. A éstas se suman los estudios más recientes realizados por ornitólogos que han visitado las islas a partir de mediados de la década de <strong>19</strong>90 -en ocasiones centrados en especies concretas-, como es el caso de Bakker & Dijk (<strong>19</strong>96), de nuevo Hazevoet (<strong>19</strong>96, <strong>19</strong>97, <strong>19</strong>98, <strong>19</strong>99, 2003, 2010, 2012, 2014), Palma et al. (2004), Ramos (2016) y los que esto suscriben (Barone, <strong>19</strong>97 a y b, Barone & Delgado, <strong>19</strong>99 a y b, Barone et al., 2012 y Barone & Bacallado, 2016). El contenedor subdesértico, dominado por grandes espacios abiertos terroso-pedregosos con arbustos dispersos, discretos barrancos, arenales, trenes dunares, salinas y saladares, permite el asentamiento de muy pocas especies adaptadas a estos severos medios, tales como el corredor sahariano (Cursorius 127 <strong>MAKARONESIA</strong>
