Medical Students and the importance of
their involvement in SDGs
Sadly, not everything is as good as we would like, our
world is still affected by the climate change’s effects,
the inequalities between gender, geographical location
of the people and discrimination towards minorities.
Moreover, the work on the field of health is still
neglected to many people in terms of physical access
to healthcare, universal health coverage and global
epidemies.
If we move that to our own context in the Americas
Region, the fight is even more complicated based on
the geographical difficulties that the countries in our
territories have, the huge amount of indigenous populations
and lack of access to multicultural friendly systems
and the ongoing mix of communicable and
non-communicable diseases we have in the region
that currently is considered not as the poorest one, but
the one with more inequalities make our society face
even more challenges.
Ivan Fabrizzio Canaval Díaz
Vice-President for Members
International Federation of Medical Studens’ Associations
Summary: Importance of the involvement of medical
students in the Sustainable Development Goals and the
2030 agenda
Now at days, our world is experiencing different changes,
we have seen how society is moving towards fairer systems
for the population, democracy is increasing around
the world and the civil society is more empowered to fight
for their rights as well as advocating for their believes,
which in the end ensures the process of inclusion and
encourage the development of governmental strategies to
bring everyone to the table and take different perspectives
into consideration in order to make the best decision.
“Let no one behind” this is the motto of the SDGs, and
based on all the previously presented we, as medical
students’ organizations, and part of this world need to
get actively involved and advocate for a fairer world.
We must approach actively to different institutions and
governments to make a sustainable change for our
populations. We must be the builders of a better
future, because this is our world and the world that we
are also building for the future generations.
IFMSA is not only a platform to get access to meaningful
information around this area but to provide you with
the needed tools to work in the development of strategies
to raise awareness on the SDG3 (and all related)
and improve health access for everyone, not just focusing
in seeking of access but a high quality one.
Let no one behind, thinking globally but acting locally.
