The power of The Latin American Citizen:
It came to my mind the situation Mexico, Guatemala,
El Salvador and Honduras are facing through their
borders. How people struggle to cross from one side
of the border to another seeking for help, and more
than help for OPPORTUNITIES. Even though we
might not live in real life their situation, we could
imagine and perceive the devastation that it can
bring. Burman activist Aung San Suu Kyi once said,
“Peace does not just consist in the putting an end to
violence or war, but rather putting an end to all
factors that threaten peace, like discrimination,
inequality and poverty.”
Currently, there are people who think keeping in silence
to the injustice contribute to peacebuilding, but the fact is
that the political apathy is the blindfold that covers our
reality due to corrupt leaders, blinding us to the real root
cause of the problems that submerge our societies.
Objectives 3 and 10 from the Programs of the UN for
Development is highly looking forward to access and
opportunities for migrants. And why is it important?
Because any achievement of these goals can’t be done if
we exclude one minority group. We have not only been
globally connected, but since the beginnings of human
civilization. In the past they might have not faced the
issues and challenges we face today, but they needed to
look for a way of survival. We under go to the biggest
displacement of human population that has been seen
since the end of World War II. What we are seeing is a
strain migration, caused by poverty, climate change,
disasters, armed conflicts and violent extremism. Health
systems need to take into consideration the needs of
migrants. By 2030, one of the targets from SDGs universal
health coverage needs to particularly guarantee the
protection against economic factors, quality access to
health services and the access to secure, efficient, and
quality medicines and vaccinations.
The range of communicable
diseases among
migrants goes from diseases
that require acute
recognition and management
of chronic illnesses
with significant public
health concerns.
Need to take into consideration different aspects such
as, demographic context, transmission methods, and
clinical presentation of a wide variety of infectious
agents. Outbreaks of different diseases such as, Malaria,
Tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS due to the change in
migration patterns, lack of access to health services
and lack of opportunities.
Estimations made
by the WHO tells
that nowadays
exist 1000
millions of
migrants, it
means, one in
seven of the
world’s population.
In which, developing countries host 86% of the forced
displaced population; surveys made by the ILO, in
2013 worldwide an amount of 4.4% of global workforce
are migrant. From now on, we have a responsibility as
human beings because we are not doing the necessary.
As top priorities we need to reinforce right-based
health systems, global health security and impulse
public efforts at reducing health inequities. Health services
must be inclusive and answer to the main necessities,
institutional arrangement, provision of financial
protection in health and the development of framework
to promote dignifies, regular, and safe migration health.
