Traduire l’Europe
A Catholic church in Belgium has offered refuge to a group of Afghan asylum
seekers on hunger strike. The men sleep and live within the church, not far from the
altar and the daily services. The camera observes their daily routines, their prayers
and their patient waiting. The minister doesn’t react and the hunger strike is drawing
out and more and more Afghans have to be taken into hospital. Negotians follow
that reveal the lack of understanding as the priest gets nervous and needs his
church back, for weddings and other business-as-usual. No frame is wasted, the
whole despair and clash of cultures unspool in 16 minutes.
The film has been inspired by a performance that Ghazel Radpay created with a
group of asylum seekers and illegal immigrants in Venice in 2005. The director
returns to Venice in October 2007 to find the participants of her performance again.
In an empty hall they present their drawings to a fixed camera, explaining their
dreams of a new home in Europe. Their faces are hidden by masks to protect their
identities, but this necessity makes their stories, hopes and dreams more powerful
and universal. Voices from the off translate their stories into three languages.
