Les images, toujours médusantes, d’une mission de la Nasa sur Mars en
2006 ; un extrait de Lotte à Weimar de Thomas Mann ; un témoignage relatant
une apparition extra-terrestre quelque part aux confins de la Finlande. Tel est
le programme que nous propose l’artiste belge Fanny Zaman dans ce premier
film. Un prologue, deux actes distincts à sa suite. Des images de la sonde
américaine qui glisse à la surface du sol, puis des protagonistes filmés en plan
fixe devant un tableau noir de salle de classe demeurant vierge. Ce sont les
espaces choisis par la cinéaste pour explorer les failles et les interstices de
nos représentations, de nos croyances.
Par de multiples et discrets glissements, de l’image au carton de texte, du
texte à la parole vive qui se le réapprorie et brode autour, Surface noue
et défait les certitudes du sens au fil de son avancée. Par la réitération, le
déplacement, dans un mouvement menant de la parole au corps qui
la porte, ajoutant ici un détail, accentuant là une intonation, un regard, le film
interroge les surfaces en œuvrant aux franges du langage. Y sourd un doute,
y flotte une atmosphère lancinante et énigmatique au fil d’un emboitement de
séquences où il apparaît que de la science à l’hallucination la ligne de partage
est labile, comme en attestent les dernières images renvoyant à un réel
incertain. Qu’est-ce que voir ? Qu’est-ce que savoir ? Quelles sont les
puissances du récit ? Mais aussi bien : qu’est-ce qu’une femme, qu’est-ce
qu’une planète ? Voilà les questions ambitieuses posées de la pointe des
pieds dans cette brève pérégrination dans l’étrange. (NF)
The images, which are always stupefying, of a NASA mission to Mars in 2006; an extract
of Lotte in Weimar by Thomas Mann; an eye-witness account of an extraterrestrial sighting
somewhere in deepest darkest Finland. This is the programme presented by the Belgian
artist Fanny Zaman in her first film, comprising a prologue, followed by two separate acts.
Images of the American probe which slides across the ground’s surface, then the
protagonists filmed in a series of stills in front of a classroom blackboard which remains
unmarked. These are the spaces chosen by the film-maker to explore the flaws and cracks
in our representations and beliefs.
Through manifold, discreet shifts, from the image to the text board, from the text itself, to
the spoken word which re-appropriates it and works it around, Surface ties and unties the
certitudes of meaning as it progresses. Through reiteration, displacement, and movement
that goes from the word to the body that utters it, adding a detail here, accentuating an
intonation or a look there, the film explores the surfaces at work within the layers of
language. Herein lies a doubt, floating in a throbbing, enigmatic atmosphere over the
course of the interlocking of the sequences where there seems to be a fine line between
science and hallucination; as the closing images attest, reflecting an uncertain reality. What
is seeing? What is knowing? What are the forces of narrative? And moreover: What is a
woman? What is a planet? These are the ambitious questions posed tentatively in this brief
foray into the strange. (NF)
