Les premiers films <strong>de</strong> Waël Nouredd<strong>in</strong>e ne laissaient aucun doute. Pour lui,<br />

le c<strong>in</strong>éma ne se résume pas à une collecte d’images. Il a plutôt pour<br />

mission d’arracher, <strong>de</strong> saisir, <strong>de</strong> transmettre l’expérience la plus brûlante,<br />

la plus vaste possible. Epreuve physique, expérience <strong>in</strong>térieure, comme<br />

disait Bataille. Plus que <strong>de</strong>s images, <strong>de</strong>s visions : son rapport au c<strong>in</strong>éma est<br />

mystique. Et ce sont en effet <strong>de</strong>s possibles religions et <strong>de</strong>s croyances<br />

archaïques, le titre en po<strong>in</strong>te l’au-<strong>de</strong>là, que ce <strong>de</strong>rnier film entend revivifier.<br />

Quittant le Liban <strong>de</strong>s précé<strong>de</strong>nts tournages pour le Yémen, il s’agit, nous<br />

prévient-on, <strong>de</strong> revenir aux sources polythéistes d’avant l’<strong>in</strong>stauration <strong>de</strong><br />

l’Islam. Aux anciennes div<strong>in</strong>ités arabes célébrées il y a bien longtemps, le<br />

film apporte son sacrifice généreux, <strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>terrompu, <strong>de</strong> plans, <strong>de</strong> coupes, <strong>de</strong><br />

surexpositions, <strong>de</strong> visages, <strong>de</strong> vues désertiques. Le très ancien est toujours<br />

là, par à-coups, il suffit d’en guetter les épiphanies, <strong>de</strong> les assembler, pour<br />

les mêler avec les dieux d’aujourd’hui : Jim Morrison, le Che, JLG, etc.,<br />

litanie contempora<strong>in</strong>e déroulée en off par la voix <strong>de</strong> F.J. Ossang. Projet<br />

rimbaldien, on l’aura compris, d’une laïcité gagnée par-<strong>de</strong>là le déni <strong>de</strong> foi,<br />

soif jamais étanchée d’émerveillement séculaire. (JPR)<br />

Waël Nouredd<strong>in</strong>e’s first films left no room for doubt; for him the c<strong>in</strong>ema is not merely<br />

a collection of images. Its mission is rather to root out and capture the most <strong>in</strong>tense,<br />

far-reach<strong>in</strong>g experiences and show them on film. These are physical feats, represent<strong>in</strong>g<br />

“<strong>in</strong>terior experience” as Bataille would say. More visionary than just images, his<br />

relationship to c<strong>in</strong>ema is mystical. And these are, <strong>in</strong> actual fact, possible religions and<br />

archaic beliefs, the title po<strong>in</strong>ts to the after-life, which his latest film en<strong>de</strong>avours to br<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to life. Leav<strong>in</strong>g Lebanon, where his other films were shot, for the Yemen, he warns us<br />

that this represents a return to the orig<strong>in</strong>s of polytheism, before the establishment of<br />

Islam. A return to the ancient Arab div<strong>in</strong>ities worshipped long, long ago, to whom the<br />

film offers a generous sacrifice, un<strong>in</strong>terrupted by the shots, cuts or overexposure, by<br />

faces or views of the <strong>de</strong>sert. The ancient is always there, <strong>in</strong> fits and starts, it is enough<br />

to look out for the epiphanies and assemble them, <strong>in</strong> or<strong>de</strong>r that they merge with the<br />

gods of today: Jim Morrison, Che Guevara, Jean-Luc Godard, etc… a contemporary<br />

litany recited off by F.J. Ossang’s voice. A Rimbaudian project, we would have<br />

un<strong>de</strong>rstood it, through a secularism acquired beyond the <strong>de</strong>nial of faith, a thirst never<br />

quenched of secular awe. (JPR)
