Work based upon Miller’s ‘Costume of the Russian Empire’ (itself based upon Georgi’s<br />

1776-1780 work). The first 12 plates depict people of Finnish origin and plates 13 to 35<br />

describe the Tartars. Plate 36 to 50 cover people from Siberia and the East while the rest<br />

This copy N° 282. beautiful red half calf binding on raised bands and with<br />

corners, fancy paper on covers, spine on five bands with black title piece and<br />

Reprint of the second edition, the only one with parallel text of the original Fr<strong>en</strong>ch together<br />

with the English translation, two columns each page, illustrated with 47 spl<strong>en</strong>did colour<br />

plates. The <strong>en</strong>gravings are the same as those of the first edition, published in the Fr<strong>en</strong>ch<br />

language only, London, by R. and J. Dodsley, 1763, under the title «L’école des armes avec<br />

l’explication générale des principa<strong>les</strong> attitudes et positions concernant l’escrime». This fine<br />

Swiss reprint of a wonderfully handcoloured copy, bound in a spl<strong>en</strong>did red half calf binding,<br />

accordingly the information of the last owner (the binder) only appr. 50 copies were bound<br />

in h.-leather, all other copies are in boards with jacket.<br />

Magnifique exemplaire relié <strong>en</strong> d.-cuir rouge aux larges coins et emboîtage. Selon le relieur de<br />

l’édition, seulem<strong>en</strong>t 50 exemplaires ont été reliés ainsi. Vigeant p. 28 and 29. ill. planche 1.<br />

Très rare édition fribourgeoise d’une traduction de l’abrégé réalisé par Francesco Butti<br />

(1686) d’une Vie de Saint Nicolas (1642) par le Père Antonio Beatillo, jésuite itali<strong>en</strong>,<br />

hagiographe et célèbre prédicateur de Nap<strong>les</strong>. L’imprimeur Jacques Qu<strong>en</strong>tz était actif à<br />
