were added (compared with the 1811 ed. by Didot or the 1819 new ed. by Guillaume Haas):
N° 35 View of Pliniana & N° 36 View of Milan. The plate n° 2 (of the 1811 ed.) was here
cancelled.
Very fine & rare early English edition in delightful colouring. Engraved-map ‘Plan of the road
of the Simplon’ bound as frontispice, signed H. Frost sculp. & 36 plates signed ‘Ackermann’
with descriptive texts.
Die sehr schönen Tafeln zeigen die Ansichten der ‘Voyage pittoresque de Genève à Milan par
le Simplon’ (Paris, 1811) der beiden Lory. Unsere Ausgabe unterscheidet sich von der ersten
französischen - vom anderen Format abgesehen, - dadurch, dass die Tafel ‘Les eaux d’Amphion’
(Mandach 173) ersetzt wurde durch die Ansichten von ‘Pliniana’ und ‘Mailand’, die hier neu
hinzukamen (Mandach 207 und 208). Selten schönes und frisches Exemplar. Gattlen S. 67,

through the Oberland in the canton of Berne, in Switzerland. Illustrated by
seventeen coloured engravings and a map showing the principal mountains
and glaciers. London, Published at R. Ackermann’s Repository of Arts, 101
Strand (printed by: William Clowes), 1823, in-4to, VIII + 120 p. + 17 plates
with views all hand-coloured + 1 map, some stains on the free endpapers only,
book contents and plates exceptionally clean, some dust stains mainly in the
margins, light occasional foxing, bound in original light brown clothbound,
covers blindpressed, spine with title and ornaments gilt, top of spine recently
restored. HRB 93348 CHF 5500.-
Première édition anglaise. Un bel album d’estampes sur l’Oberland. Très rare et très recherché.
(cf. Perret sous Weibel). Perret mentionne sous Lory, n° 2696: ‘Souvenirs de la Suisse...pour
faire suite au Voyage Pittoresque dans l’Oberland Bernois’ sans pour autant mentionner ‘le
Voyage Pittoresque’, lui-même de 1822, et il confond, selon moi, 2 différentes éditions.
First English edition in a beautiful publisher’s binding. Seventeen hand-coloured aquatint views
without signatures. The work is considered to be an English version of the work by Phil. Alb.
Stapfer «Voyage pittoresque de l’Oberland ou Description ...» published in Paris, in- folio,1812,
with 1 frontispice by Duncker and 14 coloured plates after G. Lory by S. Weibel which was
also published in 1822 in Paris and Strasbourg. In this edition 11 views are by J.S. Weibel &
6 by F. Schmid, F. Schutz, M. Wocher & G. Lory. But ‘Some of the plates in Ackermann's
book, judging by the titles, do not correspond with any in the Voyage Pittoresque, however’
(Abbey Travel). Fine ‘bright’ coloured views of Swiss lakes, mountains, glaciers & towns.
The map of the ‘Glaciers of the canton of Berne’ is bound at the beginning as a frontispiece.
