On attribuait autrefois la paternité de la Confrérie du Saint Rosaire à Saint-Dominique, qui l’aurait instituée lors de la croisade contre les Albigeois. Pergamena manoscritta del maestro generale dell’ordine Domenicano Serafino Secchi per Bernardino Colucci. Testo incorniciato da un’ornamentazione floreale, gli stemmi del Papa Urbano VIII e del Cardinale Alessandro Orsini, e da un’immagine di S. Domenico e di Sta. Caterina in preghiera davanti alla Vergine. ill. planche 14. 89. SIMLER, Josias (1530-1576): Vallesiae descriptio, libri duo. De Alpibus commentarius. Tiguri (Zürich) excudebat Ch. Froschouerus, 1574, in-8°, 8 leaves + 151 leaves + 1 leaf, printed in italics, corner of lower half titlepage restored (light stain without touching the text), contemporary full overlapping vellum binding, small obstruction (no loss) to spine, else a very clean and bright copy in fine condition. HRB 48456 CHF 6500.- First edition. Considered to be the first printed book devoted to the mountains. The «Vallesiae descriptio» is a historical and topographical publication on the canton of Wallis and on the Alps. The second work «De Alpibus Commentarius» is a milestone of Alpine literature, the Alps are treated here as the central topic. Perret on this publication: “Cet ouvrage est considéré comme le premier livre imprimé consacré à la montagne. Ouvrage important et très recherché. L’édition originale est très rare et la réédition de 1633 ne l’est guère moins. Elles sont toutes les deux très recherchées. ... L’ouvrage a été à nouveau réédité sous le titre «Thesaurus Historiae Helveticae» ... en 1735” (Perret). Erste Ausgabe der historisch-topographischen Schrift über das Wallis und die Alpen. “Dieses ist die beste Beschreibung des Walliserlandes, und ist ihres gründlich gelehrten Verfassers allerdings würdig. ... die Anmerkungen über die Naturgeschichte, Alterthümer u.s.f. sind sehr merkwürdig” (Haller).‘Anfänge des Alpinismus’. Mehr noch als die «Vallesiae Descriptio» ist der «De Alpibus Commentarius» ein Meilenstein der alpinen Literatur, dessen Bedeutung darin liegt, dass er sich mit den Alpen als zentralem Thema beschäftigt. Frühere Autoren (z.B. Tschudi, Münster, Stumpf) schenkten dem Gebirge nur nebensächliche Beachtung. Simler schuf eine alpine Enzyklopädie, deren systematische Einteilung für spätere Arbeiten auf diesem Gebiet wegweisend war. Beachtung verdient auch der Umstand, dass Simler krankheitsbedingt die Alpenwelt nicht aus eigener Anschauung kannte.
