Innovation Award
DeviceMed France backs the Implants 2012
Innovation Award
Dear Sir/Madam,
Ever since we first launched our magazine back in November 2008, we
have continually strived to promote events that showcase medical
devices, and notably international congresses and trade shows that are
held in France.
One of my personal highlights on the annual calendar is the IMPLANTS
trade show in Lyon. There are two reasons for this: firstly, I appreciate
the warm welcome that is extended to all those present and the friendly
atmosphere that prevails amidst the stands. Secondly, and most importantly,
I find that the trade show offers a veritable treasure trove of information
about developments in the orthopaedic sector. Every single year,
the event opens my eyes to the permanent effervescence of this market
which, let’s not forget, has doubled in size on an international scale since
2004 and currently represents somewhere in the region of 30 billion
euros according to Avicenne’s latest research.
This year, for the first time ever since the event was launched 8 years
ago, IMPLANTS is organising an Innovation Award, a highly original
initiative and one we are wholeheartedly backing. The award will honour
the most innovative European outsourcing providers and their partners,
giving them the opportunity to present their latest developments to
leading orthopaedic specialists. Open to all outsourcing providers, irrespective
of whether or not they are exhibiting at the show, the award
covers all fields of activity, from materials to manufacturing processes
and coatings. The winning entries will be chosen by a five-strong jury of
specialists, three of whom work for the leading orthopaedic firms.
It will be a huge honour for our magazine to present the trophy to the
winners of the Innovation Award 2012, thereby saluting the dynamism
and talent they have invested in serving the patients of tomorrow.
DeviceMed France s’associe au Trophée de
l’Innovation d’Implants 2012
Madame, Monsieur,

LayerWise produces innovative maxillofacial, orthopedic
and dental implants through Additive Manufacturing (AM)
Engineering specialists at LayerWise apply AM technology to manufacture metal
implants that are fit for purpose. Continuous application-driven research in collaboration
with customers is critical in achieving the best results and providing maximum
patient comfort.
In addition to dental implants, the offering covers innovative maxillofacial applications,
cranial reconstructions and orthopedic implants. The AM process of building up metal
in layers offers the possibility to design porous bone-replacing structures and integrate
them into prostheses. This allows for an excellent long-term fixation.
Recently LayerWise produced the world’s first patient-specific mandibular through AM,
to treat a senior patient’s progressive osteomyelitis. LayerWise specialists printed the
complex implant design incorporating articulated joints and dedicated features. The
reconstruction restored the patient’s facial esthetics and allowed her to regain her
speech within hours.
In addition to personalised implants, designed on the basis of medical imaging,
LayerWise uses the AM technology for serial implant production and can offer additional
services like engineering, CNC machining, polishing, etc. By bringing together
technological expertise, production capacity and customer support, LayerWise occupies
a unique position on European level. Our engineers control the AM process to such an
extent that they are able to perfect the technology and realize the most challenging
specifications.
MEDICAL OUTSOURCING
Infinite possibilities with OsteoFab Implant Technology
from Oxford Performance Materials
For too long, product design has been dictated by what
could be produced via traditional manufacturing
methods and materials. OPM’s OsteoFab implant
technology challenges those limits.
Using the latest in additive manufacturing
technologies, OsteoFab implants can be made into
nearly any imaginable shape. Highly complex, even
bio‐mimetic structures and implants are easily
produced in a single manufacturing process. Parts
can be made directly from a customer’s design file, or
directly from a patient’s CT or MRI scan to ensure a
perfect fit. And, because our manufacturing process uses only two components – powder and light – there is
extremely low risk of contamination.
OsteoFab implants are made from our own OXPEKK® material, an inert PEKK polymer with mechanical
properties similar to human bone, so implants can both resemble and perform like the natural material they
replace. OsteoFab implants also offer a unique topography and the ability to create open structures to
support cellular adhesion and bone ingrowth. Our OXPEKK® material has been extensively tested per ISO
10993, and has a long history of safe implantation in a variety of indications.
PLASMA SPRAYED BIOCOMPATIBLE
COATINGS ON PEEK IMPLANTS
New advanced polymeric biomaterials such as implantable poly(etheretherketone) (PEEK) are
changing the face of the implantable medical device industry.
Due to its bioactive behavior in vivo, hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings are used to improve the bone
growth and to repair around metallic implant. The objective of this work was to study the
feasibility of plasma sprayed hydroxyapatite coating on PEEK material. Different PEEK (unfilled
and composite) specimens were successfully coated with a 150 µm thick coating. Chemical and
crystallographic compositions, adhesions and microstructures of HA coatings on PEEK and on Ti-
6Al-4V were compared.
The results showed that the structure of HA coatings
were appreciably equivalent. Mechanical tests showed
that the plasma spraying process did not severely
degrade the initial properties of the PEEK substrate
and due to its bioactive behavior in vivo, HA can be
used to improve bone regrowth around the PEEK
implant.
Alicona offers optical 3D surface metrology for quality assurance in research and in production. Applications are non contact surface
roughness measurement, cutting edge measurement as well as the measurement of small radii and angles and microgeometries.
Surface analysis is carried throughout form and roughness measurement also across large measurement volumes. All 3D CMM measurement
systems are based on the principle of Focus-Variation, an EN ISO standardized technology which combines surface metrology
to measure roughness with the functionalities of a micro coordinate measurement machine to measure form. Repeatable and traceable
results are also achieved in production.
AMTI is the global leader in multi-axis biomedical testing machines. Each year more than 80 percent of the hip and knee implants
produced are man¬ufactured by companies that rely on AMTI for the critical phas¬es of implant evaluation. We have designed each of
our simulators with the ability to exceed ISO and ASTM standards, allowing for the replication of activities of daily living (ADLs), such as
running, deep knee bends, and even swinging a golf club. Our unique Adaptive Control Technology is enabled with a single click and
tunes the machine’s performance to levels of accuracy not obtainable through manual tuning. The AMTI knee simulator provides unparalleled
test fidelity through its patented Virtual Soft Tissue (VST) control, which uses an advanced software model to incorporate the
constraining influence of the soft tissue that surrounds the knee. AMTI’s ADL simulator line is comprised of a wide variety of multi-axis
wear testing machines, including hip, knee, and spine simulators, as well as a multidirectional pin-on-disc machine.
LayerWise produces innovative maxillofacial, cranial, orthopedic and dental implants through Additive Manufacturing (AM).
Continuous application-driven research in collaboration with customers is critical in producing various implant types that provide maximum
patient comfort. The AM process of building up metal in layers offers the possibility to design porous bone-replacing structures
and integrate them into prostheses, providing excellent long-term fixation.Recently LayerWise produced the world’s first patient-specific
mandibular through AM, to treat a senior patient’s progressive osteomyelitis.
In addition to personalised implants, designed on the basis of medical imaging, LayerWise uses the AM technology for serial implant
production and can offer additional services like engineering, CNC machining, polishing, etc.
