Instructional Techniques for<br />

Trainers<br />

Research indicates that people learn best by doing—this also<br />

applies to training programs. The chall<strong>en</strong>ge for those who lead<br />

learning is how to incorporate active learning into their<br />

training <strong>de</strong>sign and <strong>de</strong>livery. This workshop focuses on<br />

techniques and strategies to: plan a training initiative; op<strong>en</strong> a<br />

training session; impart learning without lecturing; sequ<strong>en</strong>ce<br />

learning activities to <strong>en</strong>sure an effective mix and flow; and,<br />

conclu<strong>de</strong> a training session with an emphasis on knowledge<br />

transfer—applying the learning back on the job.<br />

Participants will learn and practice a variety of core techniques<br />

to lead adult learning. In addition, ample opportunity will be<br />

available to apply these techniques and strategies to the subject<br />

matter they teach (or to realistic training examples provi<strong>de</strong>d by<br />

the seminar lea<strong>de</strong>r).<br />

• Four steps to effective planning and <strong>de</strong>livery of a<br />

training session<br />

• Establishing mom<strong>en</strong>tum: 'breaking' the ice with<br />

your participants<br />

• Increasing involvem<strong>en</strong>t: t<strong>en</strong> ways to obtain participation<br />

• Promoting learning: using questions to <strong>de</strong>brief an activity<br />

• Knowledge transfer: how to promote applying learning<br />

back 'on the job'<br />
