Fondazione Internazionale Balzan
in pochi anni redattore, capocronaca e inviato speciale 1 .
all’autonomia del Corriere.
successo, e proseguiva l’intensa attività benefi ca verso enti e singoli.
premi nelle categorie “lettere, scienze morali e arti” e “scienze fi siche, matematiche,
naturali e medicina”.
preferibilmente i giovani.
International Balzan Foundation
The International Balzan Foundation was established in Lugano in 1956
thanks to the generosity of Lina Balzan who had come into a considerable
inheritance on the death of her father, Eugenio. She decided to use this
wealth to honour his memory.
Eugenio Francesco Balzan was born in Badia Polesine, near Rovigo (Northern
Italy), on 20 April 1874 into a family of landowners. He spent almost
his entire working life at Milan’s leading daily newspaper, Corriere della
Sera. After joining the paper in 1897, he worked his way up from editorial
assistant, to news editor and special correspondent 1 . In 1903 editor Luigi
Albertini made him managing director of the paper’s publishing house; he
then became a partner and shareholder in the company. He was not only a
skilful manager but also a leading personality in Milan. In 1933 he left Italy
due to opposition from certain quarters hostile to an independent Corriere.
He then moved to Switzerland, living in Zurich and Lugano, where for years
he had invested his fortune with success. He also continued his charitable
activities in favour of institutions and individuals.
He offi cially returned to Italy in 1950. Eugenio Balzan died in Lugano, Switzerland,
on 15 July 1953 2 .
Today, the Balzan Foundation, international in character and scope, acts
jointly through two Foundations: one under Italian law and the other under
Swiss law.
In Milan, the International E. Balzan Prize Foundation – “Prize” aims to
promote, throughout the world, culture, science, and the most meritorious
initiatives in the cause of humanity, peace and brotherhood among peoples,
regardless of nationality, race or creed. This aim is attained through the annual
award of prizes in two general fi elds: literature, the moral sciences and
the arts; medicine and the physical, mathematical and natural sciences.
Nominations for the prizes in the scientifi c and humanistic fi elds are received
at the Foundation’s request from the world’s leading learned societies.
Candidates are selected by the General Prize Committee, composed of
eminent European scholars and scientists. Prizewinners must allocate half of
13
the Prize to research work, preferably involving young researchers.
At intervals of not less than three years, the Balzan Foundation also awards
a prize for humanity, peace and brotherhood among peoples.
In Zurich, the International E. Balzan Prize Foundation – “Fund” collects,
protects and administers Eugenio Balzan’s estate so as to place at the disposal
of the International E. Balzan Prize Foundation – “Prize” the necessary
fi nancial means to realize its objectives.
Internationale Balzan Stiftung
Die Internationale Balzan Stiftung wurde 1956 in Lugano auf Wunsch von
Lina Balzan errichtet.
Juli 1953
in Lugano 2 .
Premio Balzan 2010
per la storia del teatro
in tutte le sue forme espressive
Manfred Brauneck
Premio Balzan 2010
regia teatrale e arte drammatica.
sei volumi Die Welt als Bühne (Il mondo come palcoscenico). In essa Manfred
sviluppo artistico-innovativo, attingendo a fonti storicamente verifi cate.
propagavano, stimolavano e, spesso e volentieri, provocavano.
grandiosa, senza giudicare o dare valutazioni.
22
Manfred Brauneck
2010 Balzan Prize
for the History of Theatre in All Its Aspects
For his wide-ranging account of two and a half millennia in the history of European
theatre, as well as his research on currents and events of an international
nature in the world of theatre.
Manfred Brauneck (born in 1934) has taught Modern German Literature and
Theatre Studies at the University of Hamburg. He began teaching there in 1973.
For many years, he directed the Centre for Theatre Research and a course of
studies on theatre directing and the dramatic arts.
Whoever undertakes research in a library on the literature of the History of
Theatre will be especially impressed by the six volume work Die Welt als Bühne
(The World as a Stage). In this work, Manfred Brauneck describes over 2,500
years of European theatre culture and relates it to the contexts of the social and
intellectual structures of various periods and regions. He also explains the many
different national developments that are refl ected on the stage. This encyclopaedic
work documents the multifaceted nature and richness of a continuous
artistic-innovative development, drawing on manifold verifi able sources.
Manfred Brauneck’s special interest is the theatre of the twentieth century,
on the many styles and approaches that at the beginning of that period broke
with tradition in various places, giving rise to experiments on the stage which
propagated themselves whilst stimulating and very often shocking the audience.
In this historical milieu, Manfred Brauneck enriches the state of specialised
knowledge with anthologies of texts that show, with various comments, the positions
taken by directors, playwrights and stage designers. This profound lexicographical
work offers the latest generation of researchers, a proven factual
foundation to build upon in their own work.
In both volumes of his Dictionary of the Theatre, beyond presenting a general
vision of European theatre, he also deals with the forms of theatre found in
non-European cultures, thus expanding the concept of “theatre” beyond the
traditional boundaries of a pure art form located soley on the stage.
23
In these volumes, Manfred Brauneck’s wide-ranging knowledge enables him
to allow us to engage with various historical developments, people, styles and
concepts that are closely connected with the theatre. He thus places a grandiose
corpus of work at the reader’s disposal, without making judgements or
evaluations. In this way, this work exposes both traditionalist-conservative and
alternative-progressive intellectuals to elements which may cause them to reconsider
their positions.
The detailed account of the history of the theatre which Manfred Brauneck has
presented, giving us and future generations access to this particularly important
cultural phenomenon has led the International Balzan Foundation to award
him the Balzan Prize for the History of Theatre in all its aspects.
24
Manfred Brauneck
Balzan Preis 2010
Manfred Brauneck, geboren 1934, lehrte ab 1973 Neuere Deutsche Literatur-
und Theaterwissenschaft als Professor der Universität Hamburg. Dort leitete
Wissen teilhaben an unterschiedlichen historischen Entwicklungen, an Personen,
Auszeichnung meiner wissenschaftlichen Arbeit.
In
Was Eu-
29
jede Generation neu erarbeiten.
(1966) e ancora in Storia notturna (1989).
della Francesca e No Island is an Island (2000; Nessun’isola è un’isola, 2000) che
prova storica in History, Rhetoric and Proof (1999; Storia, retorica, prova, 1999).
Cette curiosité est à la base de son célèbre livre Il formaggio e i vermi (1976;
centré sur l’iconographie de ce peintre, il a écrit No Island is an Island (2000;
1989) et sur l’idée de preuve historique dans History, Rhetoric and Proof (1999;
Carlo Ginzburg
2010 Balzan Prize
for European History, 1400-1700
For the exceptional combination of imagination, scholarly precision and literary
skill with which he has recovered and illuminated the beliefs of ordinary people
in Early-modern Europe.
Carlo Ginzburg, Professor at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, is one of
the most original and infl uential historians of our time. He has ranged very
widely in his scholarly work, and he has also written in a more abstract manner
about questions of historical method, but his main and major contributions
have all been made as an historian of early-modern Europe.
Professor Ginzburg’s œuvre is impressively large, and includes six major works
on early-modern European social, cultural and intellectual history. His scholarship
displays at the same time an exceptional coherence of subject-matter
and approach. One topic in which he has been interested throughout his career
has been the explanation and appraisal of witchcraft beliefs and practices. This
concern was fi rst refl ected in I benandanti (1966; The Night Battles, 1983), and
it recurs in Storia notturna (1989; Ecstasies: Deciphering the Witches’ Sabbath,
1991). More generally, he has always been interested in recovering the beliefs
and attitudes of ordinary people whose lives and outlook would otherwise be
unknown. It was this concern that gave rise to his most celebrated book, Il formaggio
e i vermi (1976; The Cheese and the Worms, 1980), in which he succeeded
in reconstructing, from Inquisitorial records, the entire world-view of Menocchio,
a sixteenth-century miller. A pioneering work of micro-history, Il formaggio
e i vermi remains one of the most successful and widely-imitated examples
of the genre.
More recently Professor Ginzburg has turned his attention to the high culture
of early-modern Europe. He has written in Indagini su Piero (1981; The Enigma
of Piero, 1985) about the iconography of Piero della Francesca, and in No Island
is an Island (2000) about four moments in English literature in which the interpretation
of a classic text – one being Thomas More’s Utopia – is shown to turn
39
on an understanding of its international context. At the same time, Professor
Ginzburg has continued to contrast the elite culture of the early-modern period
with the more everyday beliefs on which he initially concentrated. Another
thread binding his books together is the urge to show how elite and popular
cultures reciprocally relate to each other.
As well as being a highly imaginative and productive historian, Professor Ginzburg
has been a methodological innovator of wide infl uence. He has written
about the nature of historical evidence in Miti emblemi spie (1986; Clues, Myths
and the Historical Method, 1989), and about the idea of historical proof in History,
Rhetoric and Proof (1999). He has also refl ected in his historical works on
the nature of his own practice, highlighting in particular the importance of the
connections between social anthropology and cultural history.
The impact of Professor Ginzburg’s scholarship has been immense. His book on
Menocchio, everywhere recognised as a classic, is available in twenty-four languages,
while his book on myths and clues has been translated almost as widely.
Professor Ginzburg’s intellectual energies and intensity of commitment remain
undimmed, and more books will no doubt follow, but his achievement to date is
already suffi cient to make him not merely a worthy but a highly distinguished
recipient of the Balzan Prize.
40
Carlo Ginzburg
Balzan Preis 2010
In seiner wissenschaftlichen
Europa.
Jahrhundert,
Genres angesehen.
In letzter Zeit hat Professor Ginzburg seine Aufmerksamkeit der Hochkultur
41
des frühneuzeitlichen Europa zugewandt. In Indagini su Piero (1981; Erkundungen
and Proof (1999; Wahrheit der Geschichte. Rhetorik und Beweise, 2001). In
Spuren fast eben so oft.
Qui, in quest’occasione
Goya
pensava a se stesso, e io guardando quel vecchio mi riconosco in lui. Non si
fi nisce mai di imparare. Ho imparato fuori dalla scuola, in maniera imprevedibile
e in circostanze imprevedibili; e ho imparato dentro la scuola, dalle
elementari in su, fi no a ieri, quando ho lasciato formalmente l’insegnamento:
dall’attenzione assolutamente inadeguata dell’opinione pubblica. Ho detto
immaginare. Ne nomino alcuni: Delio Cantimori, Arsenio Frugoni, Augu-
46
sto Campana, Arnaldo Momigliano, Gianfranco Contini, Carlo Dionisotti,
Ernst Gombrich, Lawrence Stone. E poi, fuori dalle aule universitarie, Felice
Balbo, Sebastiano Timpanaro, Cesare Garboli. Ho citato solo nomi di persone
morte.
Jacob Palis
2010 Balzan Prize
for Mathematics (pure and applied)
For his lasting contributions to the Mathematical Theory of Dynamical Systems.
The Theory of Dynamical Systems was originated by the great mathematician
Henri Poincaré, as a qualitative study of differential equations.
For more than forty years, Jacob Palis has made outstanding contributions to this
area of Mathematics. Soon after fi nishing his Ph.D., Jacob Palis became one of the
most important contributors to a programme that aimed at describing almost all
dynamical systems.
In the 1970s following in the wake of Stephen Smale, he was one of the major fi gures
in developing the Theory of Hyperbolic Dynamics and Structural Stability.
At the beginning of the 1980s, he initiated, with Newhouse and Takens, what has
become one of the most active fi elds in Dynamics: the interplay between homoclinic
or heteroclinic bifurcations and chaos. One of his most important contributions
was to reveal, in this context, the fundamental role played by fractal dimensions
in connection with the frequency of dynamical bifurcations.
Beyond these remarkable achievements, Jacob Palis recently proposed a comprehensive
set of conjectures, which together form an ambitious programme to
understand the typical behavior of dynamical systems and, in particular, chaotic
systems. This programme is currently generating immense scientifi c activity.
Very recently, in conjunction with Jean-Christophe Yoccoz, Jacob Palis has been
studying the formation of ‘non-hyperbolic horseshoes’ in the unfolding of homoclinic
and heteroclinic tangencies.
Not only has Jacob Palis made lasting and infl uential contributions to Mathematics,
but also his record as an advisor is impressive, signifi cantly infl uencing at least
two generations of mathematicians. Thus, he is recognized as the father of the
Latin American School of Mathematics in Dynamical Systems and one of the
most important scientifi c personalities on the continent.
Jacob Palis has received many international prizes, he is a member of thirteen
Academies of Sciences and a holder of honorary degrees from six universities.
Balzan Preis 2010
für Mathematik (reine und angewandte)
Für seine nachhaltigen Beiträge im Bereich der Mathematischen Theorie Dynamischer
Systeme.
Acceptance Speech
by Jacob Palis at the 2010 Awards Ceremony
Rome, Palazzo del Quirinale, 19 November 2010
Mr. President of the Italian Republic,
Chairmen of the Balzan Foundation,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I was recently lecturing at the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom,
presenting a broad view of my scientifi c work over the last twenty years or
so, when I received the news that I had been awarded the 2010 Balzan Prize
in Mathematics. It was one of the most precious moments in my life. The fact
that the present ceremony takes place in this beautiful country that embodies
the true attributes of science, culture and arts, makes the present moment even
more precious. Thank you very much, Mr. President, for this inspiring gesture.
Above all, I wish to express my deepest gratitude to the Balzan Foundation and
the General Prize Committee Members for the great honour that they have
bestowed on me. On this special occasion, I would like to praise the Italian
Government for generously and wisely supporting two important global institutions,
the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World and the International
Center for Theoretical Physics, which I have been much involved with. I should
also like to thank the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei for welcoming me as a
foreign member just a week ago. How can I pay tribute to my own institution,
namely the National Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics, and my colleagues
there, as well as the more than forty Ph.D. students that I have advised
and their many Ph.D. students spread over a number of institutions and countries,
several of them being outstanding mathematicians at the highest level? It
is a world jewel, with a wonderfully stimulating scientifi c atmosphere. To the
National Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics I have dedicated my lifetime
as a mathematician and to it I owe so much. More broadly, I want to recognize
the remarkable advancement of science in my country and I am happy to
share this moment with our scientifi c community.
59
In the development of my scientifi c work, I have travelled a long way, from the
global stability of dynamical systems, to the bifurcations of Poincaré’s cycles and
fractal dimensions and fi nally, to a meaningful proposal of a global scenario for
dynamics, comprising chaotic systems. I have begun to prove that gradient-like
dynamical systems in lower dimensions are stable, meaning that the structure of
their orbit remains qualitatively the same under small perturbations of the law
of evolution. This has considerably extended a previous remarkable work by
Peixoto. The methods of proof used have embodied a new geometric approach
that will fundamentally infl uence subsequent developments in this area of research:
the creation of the notion of stable foliations being partially subfoliated
to include those of critical points or isolated period motions of higher indices
where they accumulate. Immediately after that, this result was extended to all
dimensions in a joint work with Smale, who had been my thesis adviser. Together,
we formulated the well-known stability conjecture that became a major
topic of research in the area, partially solved, about two decades later, in a remarkable
exposition by Mañé, one of my students, and subsequently by Hyashi
in a similar context. Liao also contributed to the solution of this question. Since
the early seventies, I have become very interested in the theory of bifurcations
of Poincaré’s cycles, together with Newhouse and, sometime later, Takens. It
became clear that fractal dimensions would play a key role in understanding
such bifurcations. My early collaboration with Newhouse and Takens was later
extended to Yoccoz and Viana in the eighties and then Moreira in the nineties.
Together, we have proved that fractal dimensions indeed determine the frequency
of stability in homoclinic bifurcations in all dimensions. The case of heterodimensional
cycles in higher dimensions have been successfully considered
by Bonatti, Diaz and Rocha, among others. Based on previous work, I was able
to formulate by 1995 a bold series of ideas and conjectures that encompassed
a global view of dynamics with much more of a probabilistic character than attempted
before. The Russian school of Kolmogorov and Sinai, among others,
was inspiring. Such a programme has spured signifi cant activity and some successful
results derived from this can be seen in works by Lyubich, de Melo, Avila,
Moreira, Martens, Viana, and also Abdenur, Bonatti, Diaz, Rocha, Crovisier,
Pujals, Sambarino and Wen among others, as well as Yoccoz and myself.
Again, I am most grateful to the Balzan Foundation and I am happy to accept
60
the 2010 Balzan Prize, which will give me the opportunity to further develop
this line of research and related topics with the second half of the Prize which
will support a research project that will involve very talented young colleagues,
as well as more experienced mathematicians of renown.
Finally, I wish to thank my family, especially my wife Suely, for a lifetime of joy
and support.
Premio Balzan 2010
per la biologia
e le potenziali applicazioni
delle cellule staminali
Shinya Yamanaka
Premio Balzan 2010
Queste cellule, chiamate cellule staminali pluripotenti indotte o iPS (induced
Pluripotent Stem cells), sono state inizialmente generate tramite l’introduzione
tutti i tipi cellulari presenti all’interno dell’organismo.
retro-virali e dell’oncogene c-Myc.
2010 Balzan Prize
for Stem Cells: Biology and Potential Applications
For the discovery of a method to transform already differentiated cells into cells
presenting the characteristics of embryonic stem cells.
These cells, called induced Pluripotent Stem cells (iPS), were fi rst generated by
introducing four genes (Oct4, Sox2, c-Myc, klf4) into mouse fi broblast cells in
vitro, with the assistance of retroviral vectors. In an article that came out in 2006,
Shinya Yamanaka showed how these genes, encoding transcription factors, can
reprogram the genome of these cells and thus make them revert to an embryonic
state where they are capable of generating all types of cells present in the
same organism. Shortly thereafter, Shinya Yamanaka and his colleagues demonstrated
in a 2007 paper, that iPS cells can be obtained from human fi broblasts.
These results caused a veritable tidal wave of research on stem cells, and major
therapeutic applications are expected to be developed from these efforts. The
remarkable, yet unexpected discovery of iPS cell technology opens up hitherto
undreamed of prospects for regenerative medicine, the discovery of new drugs
and new tools for the study of diseases.
The ethical problems raised by embryonic stem cells – stem cells derived from
human embryos – have thus been circumvented, and one might now foresee
that customised cells specifi c to each patient and not subject to immunological
rejection may be made available in clinics in the future.
Since his fundamental discovery of 2006, Shinya Yamanaka and his group have
shown that different types of cells other than fi broblasts can be reprogrammed.
The work accomplished since then tends to reduce or even eliminate the risk of
tumorigenicity in iPS cells, demonstrating that cellular reprogramming can be
obtained in the absence of retroviral vectors and the oncogene c-Myc.
Shinya Yamanaka’s experimental results, which have the virtue of being easily
reproduced, have made it possible to take a giant step in research on stem cells
and regenerative medicine. They are also of great importance in the fi eld of fundamental
research and the understanding of mechanisms of cellular differentiation
and its malfunctioning, which can lead to cancer and other diseases.
Balzan Preis 2010
für Stammzellen: Biologie und potenzielle Anwendungen
Für die Entdeckung einer Methode zur Transformation ausdifferenzierter Zellen
in solche mit Eigenschaften embryonaler Stammzellen.
Induzierte pluripotente Stammzellen (iPS, induced Pluripotent Stem cells)
klf4) mittels retroviralen Vektoren in Maus-Fibroblasten gewonnen.
Zudem konnte in
Acceptance Speech
by Shinya Yamanaka at the 2010 Awards Ceremony
Rome, Palazzo del Quirinale, 19 November 2010
Mr. President of the Italian Republic,
Chairmen of the Balzan Foundation,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is a tremendous honour to receive the 2010 Balzan Award. I would like to
sincerely express my utmost gratitude to both the Balzan Foundation and to the
General Prize Committee.
Several years ago, I contributed an essay to a Japanese newspaper. At that time
I wrote “Science is a process which allows us to remove multiple layers of veils
which are covering the truth. When scientists remove one veil, they often end
up fi nding another new veil. However, when a lucky scientist removes a certain
veil, then he is sometimes able to suddenly fi nd the truth. This lucky scientist
then publishes a paper in a prestigious journal and thereafter becomes widely
acclaimed. However, we should always remember that the uncovering of each
veil is equally important. It is therefore not fair if only such lucky scientists are
praised”.
Upon humbly accepting the Balzan award, I would like to stress that the key
point to my previous essay still remains valid today. The generation of iPS cells
is based on the fi ndings of numerous scientists in the fi eld of nuclear reprogramming,
as well as countless researchers in many other related fi elds. Since
our initial report on iPS cells, many scientists have been tirelessly working to
fi nd new breakthroughs and are now advancing this technology at a surprising
speed. I therefore humbly accept today’s award on behalf of the many scientists
who have contributed to this technology, and for my colleagues, fellows and
students, who as a team ultimately made it possible for us to succeed in creating
iPS cells.
iPS cell technology is still in its infancy. Its potential use and applications in
medicine are enormous, but there are also many challenges which need to be
74
overcome before it can be successfully applied to the discovery of new drugs
and regenerative medicine. It is hard to predict what will happen fi ve years from
now. Both I and all of my colleagues will continue to do our best to promote the
medical and pharmaceutical applications of iPS cell technology.
Finally, I would like to wholeheartedly thank my colleagues, my friends, and my
family for their continuous support, without whom I could never have had the
good fortune to be with you here today.
