Si elle évite l’« à quoi bonisme, » le « jusqu’auboutisme » de l’anorexique lui
confère une capacité de tout vivre de manière absolue ; elle s'entraîne à accepter toute
difficulté, à pouvoir se passer de tout. Son contrôle, sa maîtrise de soi, sont énormes :
« amazing, even awe-inspiring to the on-looker, is the iron determination with which
anorexics pursue their goal of ultimate thinness [...]. » 132 C’est en guise d’exploit qu’un
jeune homme s’impose l’anorexie :
A male patient (aged twenty-three), to test his ability to exercise discipline, started an
anorexic regime during the last year of college. When he began to feel weak and realized
that his body was deteriorating, he increased the number of miles of jogging to reassure
himself that he was not lazy. 133
Déjà, supporter la faim extrême demande une résistance hors-norme: et comme en témoigne
l'engouement du public pour les « artistes de la faim » du XIX e siècle, les gens ont toujours
été attirés par les exploits, les prodiges, utiles ou non: conquérir Everest, casser les records
de vitesse et de distance dans l'athlétisme, être le plus grand ou le plus gros. La tragédie de
l’anorexie mentale, est que cette volonté énorme, cette persévérance, cette assiduité, sont
tournées contre l’anorexique, au lieu d’être canalisées pour atteindre quelque but difficile.

[...] anorexia was [« Vivienne »’s] way of « stepping outside the family definition, the little
coffin [she] had to live in in order to survive » [...]. To escape, she says, she had to break her
own identity and break out of its context. Anorexia was also a way of simplifying the chaos
around her, attempting to create an oasis of perfection and control, or, as she put it:
« converging, closing down, controlling, stylizing, trying to produce [...] a two-dimensional
world where everyone was just so. And no messiness ». 134
