two themes, that are in effect two expressions of
the same thought, are returned to their common
origin. The work concludes with a series of triads
whose relationship remains a mystery. We must be
satisfied to read Liszt’s own words, taken from the
end of his programme, in which he writes most
aptly: “Had we succeeded in perfectly crystallising
our thoughts, we would have wished to envisage
the transfigured ethical character of the harmonies
that emanate from every work of art, to express
the magic and completeness with which they
overpower the soul, how they float like Elysian
ORCHESTRA WIENER AKADEMIE
The Wiener Akademie was founded by its artistic
director Martin Haselböck in 1985. The orchestra,
dedicated to reproducing original sound, is
internationally known for lively interpretation,
virtuosity and music-making with a special
Austrian flavour.
Since 1991 the Wiener Akademie has played a
regular concert cycle of its own in the Vienna
Musikverein, where in June 2010 the orchestra
celebrated the 25th anniversary of its foundation
In the field of opera the orchestra has continued to
pursue new directions with rarely-performed works
such as Handel’s “Acis and Galatea”, Gassmann’s
“La Contessina”, Benda’s “Il buon Marito”, Haydn’s
“Die Feuersbrunst”, Handel’s “Il Trionfo”, Mozart’s
“Il Sogno di Scipione”, and “Il re pastore”, “Die
Schuldigkeit des ersten Gebots”. The orchestra,
together with Musica Angelica Baroque Orchestra,
Los Angeles, has undertaken an extensive tour
throughout the USA, Mexico and Europe giving
performances of Bach’s “St. Matthew Passion”.
recorded on CD, as well as works by C.P.E. Bach, W.F.
Bach, G. Muffat and G. Graun. Further highlights
from the orchestra’s wide-ranging discography
include Anton Bruckner’s first symphony played
on original instruments, Mozart’s Kirchensonaten
(complete) and Schubert’s Mass in A flat major or
Mozart’s singspiel “Zaide”.
Early in 2011 the orchestra issued the first CD of
the complete recordings of Franz Liszt’s orchestral
works played on original instruments.
role at the Vienna Ronacher Theatre. In January
2011 cooperation with Malkovich continued in
Sturminger’s new piece “The Giacomo Variations”.
The orchestra’s recording activity continues to
flourish. Rarities from the series Musica Imperialis
include works by J.J. Fux, Kaiser Leopold I and
N. Porpora, and the practically unknown guitar
concertos by Mauro Giuliani have also been
for himself early in his career a considerable
reputation as organist and worked with conductors
such as Claudio Abbado, Lorin Maazel, Wolfgang
Sawallisch, and Riccardo Muti. Ernst Krenek, Alfred
Schnittke, Cristóbal Halffter and Gilbert Amy have
written compositions for, and dedicated them to,
Martin Haselböck. His more than 50 recordings
