The golden age

One of the world’s most exclusive trade events celebrated
its twentieth anniversary this year.
The SIHH is the yearly rendezvous for lovers of
beautiful timepieces, tradition, and precision
watchmaking. Under the auspices of the
Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie, the grandest
houses of fine watchmaking come together in Geneva,
the city of Calvin, a few hundred metres from its
international airport. This year’s event was highly
anticipated, following the rather subdued circumstances
in 2009, in the shadow of the global crisis.
With no less than twenty of the finest names in
watchmaking present, this anniversary year did not
disappoint, both in terms of attendance and commercial
volume: 12,500 industry professionals and
1,200 members of the international press were on
hand for an exhibition presenting the latest collections
and newest models. A rally in all senses of the
word for this grand mass to priceless timekeeping,
attendance corroborating the number of orders taken,
to echo suggestions that a budding recovery has
accompanied the new year. Excellent news, and
confirmation if such is necessary, that the passion
for exquisite movements is burning as brightly as
ever.
Of particular note at this year’s SIHH event, and
following the inclusion in 2009 of the Ralph Lauren
Watch and Jewelry Company, was the arrival of a
further two new exhibitors: Greubel Forsey, and
Richard Mille.

les plus grandes maisons de la Haute Horlogerie,
sous l’impulsion de la Fondation de la Haute
Horlogerie, tiennent salon dans la Cité de Calvin,
à quelques centaines de mètres de l’aéroport international
de Genève. Une édition 2010 très attendue
après une année 2009 quelque peu morose et placée
sous le signe de la crise.
Ce vingtième anniversaire n’aura pas déçu tant par
sa fréquentation que par le volume d’affaires échangées
dans les stands qui regroupaient pas moins
d’une vingtaine des plus grands noms de la très
haute horlogerie.
Tous ces grands de la montre dévoilaient leurs
collections et nouveaux modèles à quelques
12.500 professionnels et 1200 journalistes de la
presse internationale. Des chiffres en hausse pour
cette semaine de grand messe de l’heure précieuse,
que viennent corroborer les prises de commande
qui annoncent les prémisses d’une reprise amorcée
au tournant de l’année. Une bonne nouvelle qui
confirme, s’il en était encore besoin, que la passion
des belles mécaniques brûle toujours.
À noter l’arrivée cette année au SIHH des maisons
Greubel Forsey et Richard Mille après la venue en
2009 de Ralph Lauren Watch&Jewelry Co.
