560 Field BuildingDefinition: A barn or similar agricultural structure used for animal shelters or for the handling,storage, or protection of farm products, supplies, vehicles, or implements.Description: Includes barns, animal and poultry shelters, sheds, silos, feed units, and haystorage. Structures are typically of light-frame construction with unfinished interiors and arefrequently located outside the central campus area. Also includes storage space for farmvehicles and implements. Service areas that support field buildings are classified within thiscategory.Limitations: Animal quarters directly supporting research or instructional laboratories shouldbe coded 570. Location of a building, on or off the main campus, is not sufficient justificationfor classification as a field building. Finished rooms with other uses (e.g., laboratories,classrooms, etc.) should be coded as appropriate. Does not include buildings that housenonagricultural or nonfarm related vehicles (see 740).570 Animal QuartersDefinition: A room that houses laboratory animals used for research or instructional purposes.Description: Includes animal rooms, cage rooms, stalls, wards, and similar rooms for instructionand research.Limitations: Animal Quarters are typically subject to the rules and regulations of agenciesregarding the care and use of laboratory animals (e.g., requirements of the AmericanAssociation for Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care [AAALAC]). Does not includeareas for treatment of veterinary patient animals (see Health Care Facilities-800 series). Doesnot include agricultural field buildings sheltering animals that do not directly support instructionor research (see 560).575 Animal Quarters ServiceDefinition: A room that directly serves an animal quarters facility as an extension of theactivities in that facility.Description: Includes feed storage rooms, feed mixing rooms, cage washing rooms, nonpatientsurgery rooms, casting rooms, or instrument rooms.Limitations: Does not include areas that directly serve facilities used for the treatment ofveterinary patient animals (see Health Care Facilities-800 series).580 GreenhouseDefinition: A building or room, usually composed chiefly of glass, plastic, or other light60 CHAPTER 5
