Comitatus Laudunensis,ix*s° (ex Vitâ sancti Remigii). Le diocèsede Cambrai le bornait au nord, celui de Noyonà l'ouest, celui de Soissons au sud et enfin celui deReims à l'est. Il comprenait deux arcliidiaconésdont l'un ne semble remonter qu'au xi° siècle legrand archidiaconé, le plus ancien, était composédesdoyennés ruraux de Bruyères, Laon, Marie, Montaigu,Neufrhàtel et Venins l'archidiaconé do Thiérache,deceuxd'Aubenton, Crécy-sur-Serre, la Fène,Guise, Mons-en-Laonnoiset Ribemont.Cette subdivisionne répond pas à un état de choses plus ancien.Le doyenné rural de Laon ne comprenait que lesparoisses de la ville et de la banlieue, moins la Neuville.Cette banlieue, Banluca de Lauduno, îaaa(grand cart. de l'év. de Laon, ch. 80), était composéed'Ardon, Lœuilly, Semilly, Saint-Marcel,Saint-Ladre, Champleu, la Neuville et Vaux-sous-Laon; elle constituait avec la ville le pays ou la paixde Laon (pax Laudunensis), 1 128 (grand cart. del'év. de Laon, cli. 3). Pays de Laon, i333 (ch.de l'abb. du Sauvpir), qui n'était autre chose que leterritoire de la commune. Celle-ci a été suppriméedéfinitivement en 1331 pour être administrée parun prévôt royal secondé par des gouverneurs et desconseillers électifs qui se rassemblaient dans lessalles voisines de la tour dite de Louis d' Outre-merDe cette tour relevaient les châtellenies de Bosmont,Coucy-le-Château la Fère et Marie, et les seigneuriesde Bouconville, Bourg-et-Comin, Brie, Fourdrain,Montloué et Neufchàtel.Indépendamment de cette prévôté, qui a été unieau bailliage de Laon en 1781, Laon avait encore uneprévôté foraine dont la juridiction s'étendait, eui37i,surle Soissonnais, le Laonnois, la Thiéracliele Porcien et une partie de la Champagne (arch. del'Emp. Tr. des chartes, reg. 102, pièce ai5). Leressort de cette prévôté était primitivement celuidu bailliage de Vermandois, dont le chef-lieu étaità Laon; mais ce bailliage, ayant été à diversesreprises considérablement démembré, ne comprenaitplus, dans le xvin' siècle, que ce qui constitueles cantons de Laon et de Sissonne; celui deCrécy-sur-Serre, moins Nouvion-l'Abbesse, depuis1737, Nouvion-le-Comte, Pont-à-Bucy, Richecourtcelui d'Anizy-le-Chàteau, moins Bassoles-Aulers, Pinon et Vauxaillon; celui de Craonne,moins OEuilly en partie, Oulches, Pargnan enpartie, Vassogne; celui de Marie, moins cetteville; celui de Neufchàtel, moins Bouffignereux.Concevreux, Condé-sur-Suippe, Dammarie, Gernicourt,Maizy en partie, Meurival, Muscourt,Roucy et la Ville-aux-Bois-lez-Pontavert celui deRozoy-sur-Serre, moins Chaourse; celui de Vervins.moins Saint-Algis, Autreppes et Gercy; celui deSains, moins Sains, Colonfay, le Hérie-la-ViévilleLandifay-et-Bertaignemont Lemé, Monceau-le-Neuf, Puisioux-et-CIanlieu, le Sourd, Wiége-Fatj.Il ne prenait du canton de la T?ère que Brie, Fourdrain,Monceau-les-Leups, Saint-Nicolas-aux-Bois;de celui de Coucy-le-Château, quela partie de Barizis

Seslimites ont été fixéesdu côté de la maîtrise des eauxet forêts de la Fère, le y octobre 1700, de la manièresuivante: la rive gauche du jNoiricu, depuisFaucommé jusqu'à Vadencourt; l'Oise séparait ensuitejusqu'au-dessous de Ribemont; de là, une lignedroite fut tirée vers le ruisseau du Péron, à i kilomètreenviron au-dessus de Monceau-le-Vieil et leruisseau servait de limite jusqu'à la Serre. Cettedémarcation ne tarda pas à être contestée de part etd'autre, la maîtrise de Laon voulant avoir les boisde Versigny, et sa rivale, ceux d'Origny, de l'anciendomaine de Navarre. Enfin un arrêt du conseil desfinances, du 19 août 172a, attribua à la maîtrisede la Fère la circonscriplion des bailliages de Saint-Quenlin de Marie et de la Fère et aicelle de Laon,les bailliages de Iiibemont et de Laon de cette façonle bois de Versigny fut laissé à la maîtrise de Marie•t la Fère et celui d'Origny à celle de Laon, qui fitabandon de quelques bois à sa rivale,Laon était aussi le chef-lieu d'une élection comprenantles subdélégations de Coucy-le-Cbàteau,Craonne, la Fère, Marie, Ribemont, Rozoy-sur-Serre et Laon. Cette dernière empruntait à l'arrondissementactuel de Laon le canton de Laon, ensuitecelui d'Anizy-le-Château, moins Bassoles-Aulers,Brancourt, Faucoucourt, Pinon, Suzy,Vauxaillon etWissignicourt. Elle prenait au canton de CraonneBourg-et-Comin, Braye-en-Laonnois, Montlienault,Moulins, Moussy-sur-Aisne, Neuville, Pancy, avecSaint-Thomas, Trucy,Vendresse-et-Troyon, Verneuil-Courtonne à celui de Crécy-sur-Serre, Crécy-sur-Serre, Barenton-Bugny, Barenton-Cel, Barentonsur-Serre,Chalandry, Cbéry-Iez-Pouilly, Pouillyet-Verneuil-sur-Serre;à celui de Marte, Grandlup-et-Fay,Monceau-le-Wast Pierrepont et Vesleset-Caumontà celui de Neufchâtel, Amifontaine,la Malmaison; à celui de Sissonne, Sissonne,Boncourt, Chivres-et-Mâchecourt, Coucy-lez-Eppes,Courtrizy-et-Fussigny, Gizy,Lappion, Liesse, Marchais,Mauregny-en-Haie, Missy- lez -Pierrepont,Montaigu, Haint-Erme-Outre-et-Ramecourt, Sainte-Preuve, Samoussy et la Selve; à celui de Bruine,Glennes, Revillon et Villers-en-Prayères; à celui deVailly, Soupir.Le grenier à sel de Laon comprenait le cantondu même nom, plus le canton d'Anizy-le-Chàteau,moins Anizy-le-Cbàteau, Bassoles-Aulers, Brancourt,Chevregny, Faucoucourt, MonampteuilPiûon, Vauxaillon et Wissignicourt.
