Bianca Andreescu captured her first professional tennis title Sunday, grabbing both the women’s singles and
doubles titles at the ITF $25,000 Gatineau National Bank Challenger.
The Mississauga teenager, a finalist at last year’s event, won five matches as a wildcard entry last week, capping
off her run with a victory over American Ellie Halbauer. She won the final 6-2, 7-5.
Andreescu, 16, partnered with Blainville, Quebec’s Charlotte Robillard-Millete to win the doubles title as well.
Together, they defeated the pair of Japan’s Mana Ayukawa and Samantha Murray of the United Kingdom 4-6, 6-4,
10-7 in the final.
On Aug. 1, Andreescu cracked the Women’s Tennis Association’s top-500, ranking 498 th in the world. She currently
sits at 626. She was ranked third in the world among junior girls in the International Tennis Federation rankings in
February and currently sits eighth.
Earlier this year, she made it to the third round of both the Wimbledon and Australian Open junior championships.
She was the top-ranked player in Australia, but bowed out of the tournament midway through due to injury.
