Being Parisian: it’s not to
have been born in Paris, it
is being born again*
Paris, the beautiful romantic
Gregory Van der Wiel, a soccer player with roots
from the Netherlands and Curaçao, has for two
years being playing with the club of the French
capital, Paris-Saint-Germain. Far from his Caribbean
island of Curaçao where he likes returning to relax,
and from Amsterdam, city of his childhood, this 26
year-old has now become a Parisian by adoption.
What makes Paris so special for you?
For me, Paris is magnificent. I like this city very much,
its inhabitants, its history, its old buildings and the
Seine. The Eiffel Tower is special for me. Even after
two years in the capital, every time I see it, I always
feel something special. I also have a unique feeling
when I stroll on the Champs Elysées and near the Arc
de Triomphe.
Do you have a favourite restaurant in Paris?
There are many restaurants where I like to eat, with
a weakness for Italian restaurants. I adore pasta
under all its forms and with every imaginable kind
of sauce!
Can you suggest a "must-see" for a first visit to
the city?
For me, the Basilica of Sacré-Coeur in Montmartre is
not to be missed for the view over Paris it offers. We
often see a lot of people sitting on the steps just to
appreciate the magnificent panorama over the city.
It is also a very romantic place.

Gregory Van der Wiel, footballeur néerlandocuracien,
évolue depuis deux ans au sein du club de
la capitale, le Paris-Saint-Germain. Loin de son île
caribéenne du Curaçao où il aime retourner pour
se ressourcer et d’Amsterdam, ville de son enfance,
le jeune homme de 26 ans est devenu un parisien
d’adoption.
Qu'est-ce qui rend Paris si spécial pour vous?
Pour moi, Paris est magnifique. J’aime beaucoup
cette ville, ses habitants, son histoire, ses vieux
bâtiments qui retracent l'histoire de la capitale au
travers des siècles ainsi que la Seine. La Tour Eiffel
est spéciale pour moi. Même après deux ans dans
la capitale, à chaque fois que je la vois, je ressens
toujours quelque chose de particulier. J’ai également
un sentiment unique lorsque je flâne sur les Champs
Elysées et près de l’Arc de Triomphe.

Avez-vous un restaurant favori pour vous
restaurer à Paris ?
Il y a beaucoup de restaurants dans lesquels j’aime
aller me restaurer, avec un faible pour les restaurants
italiens. J’adore les pâtes sous toutes leurs formes et
avec toutes les sauces imaginables !
Pouvez-vous suggérer un "must" à voir ou à
faire pour une première visite ?
Pour moi, la Basilique du Sacré-Cœur à Montmartre
est un immanquable pour la vue sur Paris qu’elle
offre. On voit souvent beaucoup de gens assis sur
les marches rien que pour apprécier le panorama
magnifique sur la ville. C’est aussi un endroit très
romantique.
