Nouvelle Aquitaine
promotes sustainable
resilience in tourism
The Nouvelle-Aquitaine region is fully aware of the
changes in demand and the impact of tourism on
ecosystems.
STAND 1 - K32
Nouvelle-Aquitaine has taken
advantage of the forced break
in tourism activities to refine a
new growth model. The region
wants to support changes in
the sector in order to promote
sustainable development which
is more sensitive to ecosystems
and takes into account the new
expectations of visitors.
SUPPORTING TOURISM TRANSITIONS
TO BUILD RESILIENCE
While the difficult
context of the
beginning of
this decade
(health, economic and ecological
crises) has required the strong
involvement of national and
regional public authorities with
economic actors, it constitutes,
at the same time, an opportunity
to rethink tourism strategies
from a sustainable development
perspective. By bringing into
question the meaning of holidays,
of mobility, but also of our collective
impact on ecosystems, these
successive shocks amplify and
accelerate the changes already at
work in the sector (increase in the
power of local tourism, increased
consideration of sustainability
issues by professionals and
customers, etc.). The expectations
expressed by French travellers
also reflect this awareness: 47%
of them now want to travel in a
more environmentally friendly way,
and 63% expect more sustainable
travel options (Booking survey,
December 2020).
reinforced in 2019 by the Neo Terra
roadmap, sets a clear political
course for the years to come and
encourages the mobilisation of
all regional tourism stakeholders
in favour of responsible, inclusive,
positive and attractive tourism for
visitors, A generator of exchanges
with local populations and new
opportunities for professionals in
the sector.
In a few weeks, we will be
announcing the roadmap for
this new mandate, which we are
developing with the entire regional
tourism ecosystem and which
will reinforce this ambitious and
proactive positioning.
A 2021 SUMMER SEASON HERALDS
A STRONG RECOVERY IN ACTIVITY
According to Antony Demel, Acting Director-General of the
Comité régional du tourisme de Nouvelle-Aquitaine, the
indicators of tourism activity are gradually turning green in
Nouvelle-Aquitaine.
“While the resumption of tourism
activity is confirmed throughout
the region, the Nouvelle-Aquitaine
Region and its regional tourism
committee have chosen to
anticipate these developments
and to reinforce its efforts in favour
of a balanced tourism model,
resilient, striving to reconcile
economic dynamism with
sustainability considerations. Its
Regional Tourism and Recreation
Development Scheme voted
in 2018 affirms the ambition to
‘make Nouvelle-Aquitaine the first
sustainable tourist destination on
a national scale’. This objective,
Driven by a
significant
domestic attendance (15% of
French people who went on
holiday this summer stayed in
Nouvelle-Aquitaine), all of our
types of accommodation (hotels,
campsites, Tourist residence)
recorded very good results this
summer (53% of establishments
claiming to have exceeded the
attendance levels of July-August
2020). We look forward to that.
In addition, the deployment of
the ‘health pass’ on a European
scale and the gradual reopening
of the borders, augur the gradual
return of the international clientele
that we are beginning to welcome
back, with happiness, enthusiasm
and professionalism.
Efforts will need to continue in
the coming months to confirm
this recovery trend. In this period
of re-conquest, the Nouvelle-
Aquitaine Region is strong with
its undeniable tourist assets to
welcome our visitors coming, or
coming back, from here and there
(optimal connectivity with Paris
and many European cities; major
world-renowned destinations
such as Bordeaux, the Basque
Country, the Dordogne, the
French Atlantic Coast or Cognac;
large spaces and unspoilt nature
(such as the Marais Poitevin, Lac
de Vassivière, etc.), which are
particularly sought after in the
post-crisis period, an exceptional
architectural and cultural heritage
that places Nouvelle Aquitaine
in the lead of French regions in
terms of UNESCO World Heritage
sites, and much more.
